Locked Sticky #WSJTX_config Dell windows computer audio problem #WSJTX_config
Jim W7EED
Hello all,
I just replaced my station computer with another. Both are Dells. I have tried to make the new computer's configuration as close to the old as possible. The reason for the change was to switch to a computer with a solid state drive rather than a rotating disc. Both are running Windows 10-64 Pro ver 21H2. I have been running WSJT-X v2.6.1 on the old computer since its release with no issues. My transceiver is a Kenwood TS-890S. I installed WSJT-X on the new computer and then copied the contents of the old PC's WSJT-X folder to the new PC, launch WSJT-X and I select FT8. Everything is working perfectly on the new PC (including CAT, decoding received signals, tuning and transmitting) EXCEPT for the signal strength bar graph at the lower left corner of the window.
The bar graph is "stuck" at about 15 dB and is red. There is no setting on the new PC that I can find that changes this. When I simply move the USB cable (I don't touch anything else), connecting the TS-890S to the old PC, everything is perfect indicating the issue is with the new PC. All of the sound settings (that I can find) that affect line level input are set to 100% (in both computers).
Has anyone seen a symptom like? I hope to get is solved before 3Y0J goes live!
Thank you for any help that you can offer ...

Have you accessed PC Settings -> Privacy -> Microphone on the
new system and *ENABLED* "Allow Apps to access your microphone"
and "Allow Desktop Apps to access your microphone"?
Have you selected the correct audio input (Settings -> Audio)
in WSJTX for the new system? Audio devices will be different
between systems and will need to be reset on the new one.

Be sure to uninstall "WAV audio services" -- Dell bloatware causing audio problems.

Hi Jim,
There is also a possibility that copying *ALL* files in the WSJT-X folder in addition to the WSJT-X.ini, call3.txt (if used at all) and wsjtx_log.adi may cause some problems in your new computer. Especially those containing "wisdom" should not be copied as they are computer/processor dependent and WSJT-x will generate them, if not present. Even WSJT-X.ini may be problematic in some rear cases.

I'm moving to a new Dell XPS 8950 with Windows 11 Home and in my services listing I have two listings, and they are not for "WAV audio services", they are
"Waves Audio Services" and,
"Waves Audio Universal Services"
Do both of these need to be disabled, and if they are, what other audio is affected (if any)? I also use this PC for photo/video production which includes audio.
Thanks for any help!

Mine is W10, not sure if there is any difference.
Originally I did disable two services, maybe those.
The second one is not present now.
To the best of my knowledge it removes unwanted services without affecting anything else. I have used more than the 4 sound devices I am using at the moment and notice no problems.
(Maybe one of them is intended to stop you deafening yourself?)
