Locked Help! Connect FT-857 with Digirig #NewUser

Evelina

Hi!

I'm a new radio user and don't have so much knowless about the radio and WSJT-X and such of - I hope you can help me!

I want to connect my YAESU FT-857 radio to WSJT-X by using Digirig Mobile but I have some issues. Without touching the settings it's connecting but I only get messages in RX Freq. page.
It would be very good if you could help me with the settings.

I'm using Windows 11, and have a working radio,

I got Rig failure error when I change the Radio settings and click on "Test CAT".

Evelina -- your call is??

I can help with the fT857 as I own one and use it for wSJTX.
I will be referring you to the manual, I hope you have one. If not it can be downloaded.

But I know nothing about the interface unit you are using, except for a quick look at their web page.

Go to page 94 in manual;

#019 sets the baud rate for CAT control, I have mine set at 38400. This is the rate you must set in wsjtx under radio tab.

#037 sets audio gain for digi modes, mine is set to 100.

#038 sets mode for digi- set to USER-U

#075 sets power, mine is set to 75 watts, not a good idea to set at 100. You can go lower if you want.

Now open WSJTX, go to radio page

this is where you need to refer to the set up instructions for the DIGIRIG

On my radio using Signalink Interface: (which provides audio and PTT, but not CAT control)
select radio Yaesu 857
set serial port used by your interface
set baud rate , which should match the radio , see #019 above.

set PTT method, I use vox my interface is Signalink, your DIGIRIG may be diffeent

set Mode to data/pkt

set split operation to fake It

once CAT works , move on the the audio setup.
a quick check of the Digirig website shows a lot of set up instructions, unless someone else that is familiar with the Digirig, I suggest you contact them for help.
https://digirig.net/getting-started-with-digirig-mobile/

hope this helps at least a bit.

Most likely cause is a problem with the serial port.
#1 Ensure using latest WSJT-X 2.6.1 https://sourceforge.net/projects/wsjt/#2 Ensure baud rate matches the rig.#3 Try setting RTS or DTR high in the Settings/Radio under "Force Control Lines".#4 Ensure you have "Default" f0or Data Bits/Stop Bits and Handshake.
If it still doesn't work
Please place this file as described belowhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/t52ngcalsgnpm8m/wsjtx_log_config.ini?dl=0
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\WSJT-X The WSJT-X_Rigcontrol.log file will be in the same location
For Linux put it in   ~/.config The WSJT-X_Rigcontrol.log file will be here: ~/.local/share/WSJT-X
For MacOS put it in /Users/[username]/Library/Preferences Restart WSJT-X and duplicate the problem.Shut down WSJT-X
Then send me the WSJT-X_RigControl.log fileMike W9MDB

Hi Michael, thanks for your reply.

1 - I uninstalled and downloaded WSJT-X 2.6.1 from the link you gived me.
2 - I made the baudrate on radio and in WSJT-X same.
The settings in WSJT-X is like this
Rig Yaesu FT-857
Baud Rate 4800
Data Bits/Stop Bits/ Handshake is Default
PTT Method I tried DTR/RTS
Mode Data/Pkt
Split Operation Fake It
But I get same error still, I will send you the log file. I hope you can help me!

Hi Michael.

I followed the instuctions in the video and changed the settings on the radio but I still get error.

I tried a second radio(FT-817) and didn't get any error. The things I'm doing in same way for the both and don't know what the problem is.
When I don't give Rig in the settings and choose RTS I doesn't get any error but I think it doesn't send any data to the other radio.
To solve the problem with FT-857 I tried another Laptop with Windows 11 but it was the same. I changed the radios own settings like they instructed in the video you send.

Thanks,
Evelina

Evelina-

download and install flrig, see if you can connect cat to the radio through flrig.

Thanks Dan KC2STA

What's the serial # of your rig?

Any other FT-857 owners out there that are working please show your serial#.....

I know the FT-847 early models were uni-directional so perhaps the 857 early models might need to avoid EEPROM reading.

Try this 64-bit DLL to replace the one you have now.

If you mean the Serial Ports Parameter have I tried bouth 4800 and 38400

Hi Evelina
When you tried 4800, did you also select 2 stop bits and no parity. I believe flow control should be set CTS/RTS.

Let's start at the very beginning ...

In the FT-857(D) menu system, make sure menu 20 is set to CAT
set menu 19 to either 4800 or 9600
(do not use 38,400 for reliability)

Configure your DigiRig for "Duplex serial CAT with logic levels"
DO NOT use RS-232 levels as the FT-857(D) CAT input is TTL (0/5V).
RS232 levels (+/- ~10V) will damage the rig. The default (factory)
setting of DigiRig is "Duplex serial CAT with logic levels."

Load a basic rig control package like FLrig ... configure it to
control the FT-857(D). Set the CAT baud rate to 4800 or 9600 (as
set in menu 19) with 8 bits, *2* stop bits and no parity. Set
RTS and CTS to OFF (the FT-857(D) does not support RTS/CTS) unless
your rig control (DigiRig) requires it. Note: reading the DigiRig
web site indicates DigiRig can use RTS for PTT.

I strongly recommend you visit <www.digirig.net/getting-started-with-digirig-mobile> and study the information there.

Once you have a basic rig control package like FLrig "talking to"
(controlling) your FT-857(D), you can move on to WSJTX. Configure
the radio control portion of WSJTX the same way as FLrig and
follow the instructions at www.digirig.net to configure the audio.

Evelina, please sign your postings with your amateur callsign.

I use PSKreporter to see where my signal is being heard. No use calling "CQ AF" if no one in Africa hears you.

Hi, Joe!

Thank you for the instructions but I didn't came so far I have same issue.

I don't get error when I setup my rig settings in WSJT-X to:

Rig Yaesu FT-857
Poll interval: 1 s
Baud Rate: 4800
Data/Stop Bits and Handshake: Default
Fore Control Lines: Blank
PTT Method: CAT
Mode: None
Split Operation: None

I don't know how much I'm in the right way in with this settings. Actually it is very annoying that I can't setup like others..

Evelina

d_ziolkowski

have you tried FLRIG?

it definitely works.
then in WSJTx set RADIO as flrig
that is how I run wsjtx with my ft857

Those are the factory default settings in the FT-857. If you
expect to use any others in WSJTX you will need to make the
necessary changes to the menus in the FT-857. However, if the
defaults work, why change?

Yes, I also tried the DLL you sent to me.

With the setups I post earlier today I could connect I saw the callsigns who was on air. But not more than it.
