Locked "Error in Sound Input" (message box) Circle w/ RED X ---- my WSJT is "BRICKED" #AudioIssues #Windows10 #Elecraft
Win10 | Elecraft K3 | wired direct, K3 to Sound Card, No interface,
I've been used WSJT-X for 2 years, then suddenly it quit decoding from my K3, no GREEN signal bar or decode. My WSJT-X is now as useful as a brick Going to the most basic configuration..... I disconnected all cables from my radio and decoded a sample .wav file, It worked OK However.......When I hit MONITOR button I immediately get subject error (see subject line). This happens with no cable connection to radio and with SETTINGS, RIG = none I uninstalled and reinstalled Ver 2.4 several times and even want back to Ver 2.2..... same thing I deleted all residual config and app-data files (that I could find) with WSJT name after I uninstalled.. still no help In the past, during set-up, every time I turned on the radio I immediately got a green signal bar and things started decoding. I've never had or seen the aforementioned error code and Ive been doing FT8 for years. I tried many different settings with cables connected..... same problem. I use an internal sound card, but purchased a new USB sound device and all new cables..... nothing gives me a GREEN signal bar. Someone with internal knowledge of WSJT-X and the cause(s) of the aforementioned error would be of great assistance. I did installed Ver 2.5-rc3, but backed off to Ver 2.4. Possible I have screwed something up in the REGISTRY ? HELP |

Win10 | Elecraft K3 | wired direct, K3 to Sound Card, No interface,Hi OM, WSJT-X does not use the Windows registry. The error message indicates you have not selected the correct audio devices in "Settings->Audio". Sometimes a pending Windows update can disrupt audio interfaces, so try a Windows restart (note not shutdown and reboot). 73 Bill G4WJS. |

"so try a Windows restart" .....was suggested...... yes I did a restart ....I did a zillion restarts while troubleshooting
Please note that ..................my radio is disconnected and OFF Please note again that ........Rig = none Please note again that ........FT-8 sample files decode flawlessly and repeatedly with clicking DECODE button Please note again that .. Hi Bill, It seems that Windows does not recognize your sound card or that sound card is not selected in wsjt-x Audio tab. The audio card driver may also be faulty or missing. I would start by deleting the audio card driver and reinstall it. I am not expert in Windows, but the audio driver may be automatically installed at restart after drive deletion. Of course it needs to be inserted at restart (not reboot, I think). 73, Reino OH3mA

I Will try........ to delete my internal sound card.
However I plugged in a spare USB module and got same error. Even further .......... I purchased a new USB sound device.... and cables.... got same error. Remember....... I set RIG to NONE and the decode of sample files works. It is only when I click MONITOR button that I get the error. My first indication of trouble.......ALL OF A SUDDEN one day the green level bar showed no signal. I've been using wsjt-x for years with same hardware. |

Good Grief !
Now I've uninstalled all sound device drivers In Device Manage (verified void of drivers) and tried it without drivers (before restarting) same thing ..."Error in Sound Input" then restarted and verifier that drivers were automatically reinstalled....same thing "Error in Sound Input" and all this with Settings: RADIO = NONE and no cables connected to radio simply clicking MONITOR causes "Error in Sound Input" message box This would seem to confirm that internal sound card is not bad Good Grief ! |

I give up. I just finished doing a windows recovery (reinstalled windows) and have same problem, At this point I need some one like Joe Taylor, who knows the code and the exact conditions that could cause "Error in Sound Input".

I get that when RF gets into my computer. Sometimes this requires a complete reboot.

No RF getting into computer. Because no radio is connected. Radio type is set to NONE as done for demonstration decode of sample files. The most basic configuration.

Is that when you start up WSJTX or when you transmit? In my case WSJTX works but JTDX is giving me that error on startup -- just started happening one day a couple weeks ago. That error message is pretty useless but I guess it's a good as Qt can give. Mike W9MDB

At this point I need some one like Joe Taylor, who knows the code and the exact conditions that could cause /*/*"Error in Sound Input".Bill, The problem is that there are no exact conditions. "Error in Sound Input" is a general warning that covers misconfiguration or driver problems. Most usual is configuration. But I have experienced a driver problem, Windows updated a driver and my on-board sound would not work. I had to go to the manufacturer's site and get the correct drivers. Then make sure Windows did not do that again. I suggest you get a suitable USB soundcard, maybe someone local to you could recommend something available. Or, maybe a Signalink or similar. Many use these devices and will be familiar with them. It is always better to have a dedicated device for your radio. 73 Alan G4ZFQ |

Did u try resetting the USB system? Windows tends to get usb inputs confused. It keeps a 'list' that can be cleared. This usually fixes the problem. Phil,
I find that W10 only gets confused if you move USB cables around. I tend to keep my cables connected. HF Rig and USB hub in the back of the PC. Keyboard, webcam/microphone, mouse and VHF rig programming cable in the hub.
I made the mistake of unplugging them while I tidied the desk wiring to remove unnecessary walwart cables adding 100 Hz crosstalk to the rig DC cables. That’s the only time I’ve had to rename the USB Audio codecs for the rig. Also I think the rig has its serial number encoded in the USB interface.

Thanks: To All who have Helped
Understand that I have my computer stripped down to the most basic form, and able to successfully decode SAMPLE .wav files, just as if I had no radio and wanted to experience WSJT-X. There is no radio or cables connected and I have gone so far as to removing all Sound Card Drivers (Device Manager shows empty) and SETTINGS: RADIO = NONE. Yet when I touch MONITOR, I Get the Error. Further note, that my office computer, 6ft away, is a mirror hardware copy, and configured the identical way with WSJT-X , Yet i get no error when I touch MONITOR. I can only assume problem is within the computer. Yes I have reloaded Windows 10. It is further noted that I have been using FT-8 for a year with this rig, when suddenly it quit. To prove my diagnosis....... I have ordered a longer CAT cable that will reach my office computer as well as new audio cables. If this don't work I might want to change my brand of cologne. Bill |

You don't mention Windows updates. Issues often occur after updates that 'decide' what the correct usb allocations should be. On Sun, 5 Sep 2021, 07:39 , <bill333@...> wrote: Thanks: To All who have Helped |

Alan,
I now have no working sound devices is this here (my office) computer, and I get no error when I tap MONITION button, so WSJT does not need a sound device to work in stripped down mode to demo decode of sample files. I see no sound device in the Device manager, BECAUSE I DELETED THEN ALL Phil, See post above, to Alan: There is no sound device, that includes USB. Be mindful that it is my Radio Computer that has the Error, even in stripped down mode just like my office computer that i am typing on now; It has no Error and is Identical stripped down hardware. __________________ As I mentioned, several posts above, I ordered longer cables to substitute (this) my identical office computer. I expect it to immediately start decoding live FT-8 from my radio. That being said, i think something is broke in the computer box, |

One thing that I find (sometimes) works when nothing else does:

1) Power off the computer 2) Unplug the power cord 3) Press the power button for 10 seconds by your watch. 4) Plug the power cord back in. 5) Power the computer up. [Yeah, doesn’t work on laptops unless they have removable batteries.] Worth a try, and easy to do. 73, Willie N1JBJ

I know you all are trying to be helpful but things are getting redundant. Please read this entire string before posting your suggestions. My next step is to try a different computer.
