Locked Mac OS Update Freezes WSJT-X #macOS #stopped_working

Rick Manzer

Is anyone else seeing this problem on Mac?

Since the Mac OS to 13.x update, WSJT-X locks up when it transmits in FT8. Until the update, it received and decoded normally. Now, transmitting usually causes the app's waterfall to stop flowing, the receive signal on the lower left of the GUI to zero out, and when I quit WSJT-X, it must be forced to quit in order to restart it. Sometimes stations reply to a call, but then the app locks up and ends the exchange. Other times, it locks up during the first transmission. The radio seems to receive normally.

Before the OS update, it all worked fine. It even happens even when Tx power is reduced to 0 watts, so it’s not RF getting into the Mac. I also removed and reinstalled WSJT-X. I'm hoping not to have to back out the OS update.

Mac OS 13.0.1 on iMac 3.1Ghz 6 Core i5
WSJT-X v2.5.4
Radio Flex 6600M with SmartSDR
JT-Bridge 3.4.3

Any suggestions?

Rick, I’m using Ventura on my intel based MacBook Pro with WSJT-X 2.6.0 rc5 without issues. Maybe upgrade to 2.6.0? Radio is FTDX10 though. Also using JT Bridge and Rumlog.

Yes, a bunch of people are after the update to macOS 13.0 Ventura. It;s
happening on all versions of WSJT-X including 2.6.0 rc5.

I saw and reported this behavior when I updated to 13.0.0, and there was no
solution or recommendation. I did several complete removals of the software
and auxiliary files and reinstalled both 2.5.4 and the latest RC to no
avail. After updating to Mac OS 13.0.1, a complete removal and reinstall of
2.5.4 resolved the issue.

The update is available in System Preferences/General/Software Update

I have 13.0.1 and my applications will not recognize any ports except the /dev/bluetooth
Not sure yet on where the issue is.

For giggles I tried again.

I'm on 13.0.1 too.

Uninstalled everything. Used CleanMyMacX to do so. Reinstalled 2.6.0 rc5. Redid special file. Rebooted. After cycles the waterfall stopped moving and nothing being decoded.

I uninstalled with CleamMyMacX again. Reinstalled 2.5.4. Redid the special file. Rebooted and again after 5 cycles the waterfall stopped moving and nothing being decoded.

Also, the app hangs/stops responding when you try to quit. Just like before with 13.0.

I'm stuck.

I’ll make two suggestions:

Update your hamlib version. I compiled hamlib for Mac this morning at:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/uf9j4km8oliiz48/wsjtx.260rc5.zip?dl=0

In Finder, go Applications, right click on WSJT-X app and select show package contents, click on contents and paste the file into the preferences folder. Tell it yes when it asks whether to replace your old file.

There was a problem with the hamlib that was shipped with rc5 that impacted Flex radios that was corrected in the current hamlib.

I’ve also seen it suggested that you rename your WSJT-X.ini file found in ~/library/preferences. WSJT-X will create a new one but you’ll have to reenter all your preferences in the general, radio, audio tabs etc in WSJT-X.

If these don’t help, I’m fresh out of ideas.

I don't see a Preferences folder inside the contents of my WSJT-X 2.6.0-RC5
app file. And your file is a wsjtx.app file with a white circle & slash
through it. Seems weird to update the hamlib parks of the rc5 app file
when it started with 2.5.4 with a FTDX10 radio back when Apple released
macOS 13.0 Ventura.

Tried a fresh WSJTX.ini file too. Nope. Took longer to die though.

FUDGE.
