Locked WSJTX FT8 on FT-991A with no Power Output (PO) #transmit
RozandAlMulherin@...
HELP!!
I’ve busted hump and worn out YouTube for a couple days now trying to get WSJT-X to work FT8 on my 991A. Everything has been set up according to MANY different suggestions on YouTube and in various forums. No matter what, I CANNOT get any Power Output (PO) on my rig. The TEST comes back green and the PTT test activates the transmit on the rig but there is no PO. Someone surely has had this problem and I hope can help one frustrated son-of-a-gun! Thanks! KR0ZAL Settings in WSJT-X are currently 31- 38400 (Tried 4800 and 9600 also) 32 100msec 33 Disable (Tried Enable with several other setting variations as well) 60 Off 62 Others 66 Off 68 Off (Tried 3000) 72 USB (Tried RTS with several other settings) 106 Rear (Also tried MIC) 107 20 (Also tried 50) 108 RTS (Also tried DAKY) 109 USB (Also tries DATA) NF, NB, CONT, DNR, DNF all OFF AGC AUTO ATT OFF NARROW/WIDE 3000 Width 3000Hz VOX OFF DT GAIN Tried various points between 8 and 50 RF Power Tried various points between 25 and 100w In WSJT-X Data Bits 8 Stop Bits 2 Handshake Hardware PTT Method RTS Mode USB (Have tried the other options) Split Rig (Have tried the other options) I've also tried another suggested method of putting everything data related to default in the 991A settings and just having 108 RTS and 109 USB. NOPE! Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. |

https://www.w6pql.com/misc/wsjt-x/ft991-wsjt-x.pdf Your settings for 70 and 71 are probably incorrect and/or you don’t have the right audio endpoints setup in WSJT. You want 70 to be rear, and 71 to be DAKY. If you want to test, turn the power on the 991A all the way down or better yet use a dummy load, hit the tune button on WSJT as watch the AGC/PO meter. If it doesn’t move, reach over at key up the hand mic and tap the front. If the AGC/PO moves then 70 is set to MIC instead of REAR. I’m not a huge fan of the 991A menus. I’ve set WSJT up on several rigs with USB inputs and the 991A is by far the least obvious to set up. It doesn’t help that there are many fewer setup guides for the 991A as compared to other rigs like the IC-7300. Since you seem to have PTT and CAT working with what you have now, leave it as is until you get a known good setup. That said, you’re actually configuring a serial connection for frequency, mode, and PTT commands and a separate audio path. Settings like RTS/DTS won’t have any effect on the signal sent out other than as part of the serial communication to tell the 991A to key up. Also, be aware that the 991 will happily have you set everything up to work with USB and USB-D. Be sure you are setting everything up with DATA and that WSJT is configured to tell the rig to use DATA mode. If you don’t do this you might get everything working only to discover that you have configured everything for USB instead of USB-D such that your normal SSB phone setup clashes with WSJT. 73, Brian - KB2S On Tue, Sep 6, 2022 at 12:24 AM <RozandAlMulherin@...> wrote:

I see from his settings that the radio has RTS off, but he is using RTS for PTT.

When testing for power output, use the [TUNE] button in WSJT-x main screen. it will generate a tone for the radio to modulate. I adjust the radio for about 20W output and then use the WSJT-x [Pwr] slider down until ALC drops without dropping output power (20W if you set to 20W). If power level drops, then increase the WSJT-x [Pwr] slider up until Power output is at radio settings. This is as low as you'll get ALC. For receive, to adjust WSJT-X receive level (30 with no signal present; 60 with signals) adjust Data Out Level - (073). For my setup 15 works fine. Hope this helps you get back on track. Hey guys! Thanks for getting back to me on this. Been working all week so didn't get a chance to play with it until last evening. According to your settings, Brian, I was able to get some Power Output. I started at 20 watts and have worked my way up to 50. I started with a DT Gain of 18 and worked my way up to 50. At 50 watts my ALC is almost full scale with the WSJTX slider at about 50%. I put out a CQ call numerous times at different points where there was plenty of activity on 20 meters and 40 meters. Though my CQ shows up on the right side of the WSJTX screen, it never appears on the left side and I haven't been able to get a single reply to my CQ call or any attempt to answer others' CQ calls. Still something missing in the mix or that I have got set not quite right. Suggestions, anyone????? And, thanks in advance!

Interesting. I am having no FT mode problems but wonder what that hamspots is. I went to the link but there is no documentation at all about what it does and how to use it.

The site will give you and idea where you are being spotted, if your DT times look OK, and what signal levels others see you at. I use it mainly for checking DT and signal reports. Mike W9MDB On Sunday, September 11, 2022 at 06:39:22 PM CDT, Gilbert Baron <w0mn00@...> wrote:

Set your rig to 50W and set the WSJT-X power slider to -3dB. Then adjust DT Gain so you get a touch less then 25W out. -3db with the rig at 50W should be ~25W.You should see no ALC action. As you increase the power slider in WSJT-X (you can just click on it and use the cursor up/down keys) you will probably see the ALC start coming up around 40-45W.A little ALC should be OK but I'm not sure of the ALC behavior on the 991A. Run WSJTX to full power and then adjust DT Gain to get 45W (you should already be close). If you then turn the rig to 100W you should see 90W -- and that's close enough to full power and should guarantee a clean signal.

Rigs tend to show RMS power and not peak power -- and peak power is where the clipping will start. Mike W9MDB On Sunday, September 11, 2022 at 06:19:44 PM CDT, RozandAlMulherin@... <rozandalmulherin@...> wrote:

That's what I like more than anything about this hobby; fellow hams are ready to share all they can to help out guys like me that get hung up. GREAT BUNCH OF PEOPLE!! Thanks to all of you for helping. I was able to determine that the Application Sound settings on my PC needed to be a 100% for the com port to put out proper signaling to the rig. Once I adjusted that up and put some of your collective recommendations to work, we were able to get quite a few QSOs. We will keep refining the signal quality and trying to get the best possible settings on the 991a and PC to make things work top shelf. Again..thanks to everyone who offered help!! VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. 73 KR0ZAL.

Went thru the same thing a few days ago with rig keying but no output, uninstalled WSJTX and reinstalled with the same problem. Finally figured it out, the daughter had audio muted on the laptop, pushed the mute button on and all is now good. 73 Duane AC4ZH

There are several reasons without audio or no output.
Make sure the followings: 1.Your send frequency by WSJT-X whether 1400Hz-1600Hz or not? 2. MENU NUMBER 64 and MENU NUMBER 65 in FT-991, Both are 1500Hz if TX frequency is over 2000Hz. Rick 7L1RLL |

Menu number 071 is different from my setting on FT-991A. My setting for menu number 071 is DTR instead DAKY.
And my setting for PTT Method is DTR instead CAT. I hope this may be help you. Rick 7L1RLL |
