Locked #IssueReport #TechnicalHelpQuestion Accessibility of WSJT-X for Blind and Other Disabled Hams? #IssueReport #TechnicalHelpQuestion

Darrell Hilliker <darrell.hilliker@...>

Hi Everyone,

My name is Darrell, and I am a blind extra-class licensed amateur radio
operator with the callsign NU7I. I am also an accessibility support
engineer with Salesforce.

I am writing to ask if the developers of WSJT-X would consider making
enhancements to improve the accessibility of the software for blind hams
and others with disabilities. Specifically, could we please have full
keyboard-only accessibility to all controls in the user interface and some
proactive alerts or another way to access incoming messages and status
updates? Could we please also have a working relationship with the
developers where we could report specific accessibility bugs?

I have available volunteer time off through my job and I would be happy to
utilize it to help the software's developers improve its accessibility.

I thank everyone in advance for your time and thoughtful consideration.

73,

Darrell (NU7I)

QLog has support for vision impaired operators and supports WSJTX.
This is a rather annoying youtube video (listening to all the signals too)  but does show the QLog program talking to WSJTX -- all keyboard controls to call CQ or answer CQ's.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the information about QLog. I am aware of this software, but it
does not provide access to everything WSJT-X has to offer.

What I am talking about here is full accessibility to the actual WSJT-X
software in the same way sighted hams enjoy.

Thanks and 73,

Darrell (NU7I)

Hi Darrel

There is a qlog user group on groups.up that you can contact. You can also contact Rich K1htv regarding the qlog program that I wrote. With it as a companion program to wsjtx a blind/visually impaired ham can do anything a sighted ham can do including all the special operation/contests.
The demo program is rather old and does not show all the functionality but will give you some idea as to how it operates. There are additional programs that will allow you to set the waterfall and generate the settings for all the special operations as well ads searching through the all.txt file without the need for a screen reader.

Hi Sam,

I appreciate this information, I have participated in a couple of the QLog
monthly calls and I have tried the software.

My questions are specifically about making the source WSJT-X accessible so
that it may be used effectively with a screen reader without additional
software such as QLog.

Thanks and 73,

Darrell (NU7I)
