Locked Get Auto Grid info from platform location services #EnhancementReqest
Steve Masticola
Most platforms have built-in location services these days. These rely on multiple sources of data and don't necessarily require GPS.
I'd like to request that: a) Auto Grid be set on by default, wherever any location service exists; b) Auto Grid use platform-based location services by default. This would avoid some problems with PSKReporter spots from an incorrect grid when someone does a portable operation and forgets to set the grid. 73, -Steve WX2S |

What platforms have built in location services?Does seem the autogrid option could just be removed and leave it on all the time. I don't see any problem with that.

Platform location services are not sufficiently accurate

Windows, iOS/MacOS, and at least Ubuntu Linux have location services. Don't know offhand about others. Obviously it doesn't make sense to include this feature in an OS that doesn't support it.
Location services are accurate to GPS accuracy on platforms that have GPS. Absent that, they'd still be better than being six thousand miles off, as in the case of the Hawaii vacation. Extreme accuracy isn't usually needed. The grid that I live in (FN20) is about thirty miles by fifty miles. And it's possible for people to look up their grid square wrong or type it in wrong, too. - Steve WX2S |

My "Location Services" at home lists me anywhere from San Antonio, Austin or Dallas. Dallas would be the most accurate.
Apparently, they determine my location based on the IP address assigned to my router. My mistakes with grid, so far, is moving from my home QTH where it is correct and when setting up in a POTA site, I forget to change the grid. And then again when I fix it and then return home, where it is wrong again. I wrote my own software to control my radio (FT-891 & FT-991a) I added a GPS interface. Now I get my accurate time! (Yay me!) and while it is there, I get Lat/Lon which I convert to six ( 6 ) digit Grid Square. Next goal is to create a UDP link to WSJT-X to push Grid Square if it changes! Yes, one time I ran WSPR TX/RX while driving for an hour from QTH to POTA site. Just some side comments, as my experiences may be different... :) Best regards, Steve - KC5NK |

Yes, wired devices without internal GPS are generally assigned a location based on the IP address (e.g. the router in the case of a home LAN). The location of the IP address is that provided by the ISP - generally their "server farm" servicing the connection. That is, of course, the fallacy of using "location services" for the grid in WSJTX or similar software with any of the "desktop" operating systems. It is an entirely different matter with iOS and Android where the hardware (cell phones and tablets) generally have internal GPS for location. 73, ... Where do I tell WSJT that I have a GPS attached to my computer on USB port X, so it can go out and retrieve the info? N6RMJ -----Original Message-----

There is no ‘automatic’ option to do as you ask. See this thread from a couple of weeks back: https://wsjtx.groups.io/g/main/message/32363 You can get a 3rd party script, will need tweaking a little and away you go. The script will have the settings for GPS port and generate the UDP messages WSJT-X can then use. Tom GM8MJV On 26 Feb 2022, at 17:21, PATRICK COKER <n6rmj@...> wrote: |
