My FT991A was Intermittently shutting down. When WSJT keyed it, it would reset. I checked my power supply and power cables and all was well.
What I found was, apparently the antenna tuner does not “remember” where it’s has been. When I change bands I HAVE to activate the tuner to match, then I have no Issue.
Hi Ron,

Most tuners do not really like being in automatic tune more on full power. I know my MFJ tuner controlled by my IC7300 doesnt. So I have to semi-auto tune it with 10W when I change bands.

I reckon I could risk full auto with WSJTX as long as it's already been tuner on all bands. I don't know if your tuner (internal?) Supports this mode.

I only use it on 80-40-30 using a 80M doublet

Tnx Cliff for the info about the heating problem.  I bet that is the basis of my issues.  That would explain the erratic operation, etc.  It has been very frustrating.  I’ve used multiple shielded cables and every setting I found recommended by anyone - all without a lasting cure.  I was running about 40 - 50 watts on FT8 and bet everything got overheated.

I've been using WSJT-X version 2.4.0 successfully along with JT Alert for WSJT-X version 2.5.9.0 with no issues for quite a while on my FT-991A, but I have found in long transmit digital modes the factory installed cooling fan doesn't cool the rig sufficiently. If I'm on FSKH-105 Hell mode and make transmissions up to 2 minutes long at times the radio would get very hot running only 30 watts maximum, so hot I was fearful I may possibly burn the finals out, but I have discovered how to keep it running nice and cool! The factory installed cooling fan is only about 3" x 3" and I took an old 12 volt 4" x 4" whisper fan from an old computer and wired it to a 12 volt wall wart (AC adapter) and as long as I sit that cooling fan directly against the factory cooling fan blowing outward my FT-991A runs as cool as can be! When I told Cliff, AE5ZA , the 40 meter band Feld Hell Club's Net Control station, about how my rig was running so hot he said his IC-7300 didn't get hot at all so apparently Yaesu dropped the ball on the size of cooling fan the FT-991A needs because the 4 x 4 inch fan is doing the job efficiently. If my memory serves me right I think Yaesu had overheating issues on the original FT-991 models. Anyway, I thought I'd pass this info along in case it may be helpful to another fellow ham. It's working for me very well!

Very 73,
Cliff, KU4GW

Thanks Paul. I have had no prob with the radio... just the connections. If you have had to return it 3 times, it is however time to change! the 7100 is great radio as well.

Trying to set up my ft991a on wsjt-x with only a usb cable and, well, you know...having trouble.

Shielded A/B cable. Check.
Yaesu Drivers installed and visible as com4 and com5, Check
Wsjt-x configured as indicated by many
CAT check and PTT check. Checks
RX- All good
PTT check
BUT NO xmit power.

Audio codecs are set. There must be something in the rig menus I have not set properly though I have followed the directions from two online videos.  what am I missing?  Anybody who wants to be hero and can also TALK me thru this for 5 mins (west coast) would be fab/ But all suggestions appreciated!

I feel your pain. I have repeatedly had the exact same problem. I redo everything and (with luc) it works, for awhile and then quits. Now my FT-991A has no output on any mode into a dummy load, so it is back to the shop for a third time. (The first time the main board blew, just after the warranty was up. The second time Yaesu found nothing wrong and it worked for me for about two weeks. I’m waiting to hear what they have to say now.). As an aside, I purchased an Icom IC-7100 and had absolutely no problem getting it to work - and stay working for several months at a remote location. I may just give up on the FT-991A.
