Hello,

I just got my 991a last week, and I am trying to set up WSJTx on it. I think I got everything working, except for that when WSJT goes to transmit, the radio is using the microphone for the input device. This seems to me like it would be a setting in the radio. Computer is a Lenovo X1 Carbon running Windows 10.

Does anyone have any idea on how to fix?

Hi Jay,

answering your dual queries in separate threads for clarity.

Are you saying the Tx audio is being taken from the mic socket and you want it to be taken from the RTTY/DATA socket or the USB connection? See page section DATA (PSK) Operation in the FT-991A Operators Manual (page 122 in the English version) for comprehensive instructions for use with AFSK data modes.

Thank you! I got it. SSB Menu number 106 SSB mic select needs to be set to REAR….

I changed this and now everything works just great!

Thank you!

I use DATA-U mode for WSJT-X instead of SSB mode. Also, you can't turn off AGC in the FT-991A menus, but if you first connect to your rig to some rig control software such as Win4Yaesu or HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe) you can turn the AGC completely off which is what I did after reading the recommendation in the WSJT-X online manual. I don't know why Yaesu didn't put an off setting in the AGC menu on the radio itself.

They (Yaesu) did put the AGC off setting on the menu.

Press and hold the AGC button to switch it off.
Quick press just cycles through Auto, Fast, Med, Slow.

Cliff (KU4GW),

I agree fully with using DATA-U mode vs. SSB since it bypasses any SSB mic equalisation that may be dialled into the 991A, giving a flatter audio response up to at least 3 kHz.  Something else I'd suggest if you want to control the 991A in parallel with running WSJTx is to use FLRig as the middleware.  After installing FLRig and verifying that it has control of the 991A, change the "radio" in WSJTx to "FLRig".  I've been operating this way for a long time and like the ability to change 991A settings on the fly without disturbing WSJTx.
