Full duplex mode for Satellite operations #EnhancementReqest

Satellite FT4 operations are starting to become popular.
Full duplex operation can currently be accomplished by running 2 instances of wsjt-x.

It would greatly simplify satellite operations and save screen real estate if there were a Full duplex mode in wsjt-x

I second this....

It would be a good idea to check with the owners of any particular satellite to find out if they allow FT4 or any other constant carrier mode on their Linear birds.

It is very hard on the power budget of a linear bird to have multiple stations key down for excessive periods of time. For this reason, SSTV, RTTY , and FM are NOT permitted on linear birds.

FT8 would be a VERY selfish mode to run on a linear satellite. FT4, with it's 7 second tx cycle might seem marginally acceptable, but still not power budget friendly.

In any case, before people get excited and try to popularize FT4 on a given satellite, please check with the Sat owners to find out if that mode is acceptable, given the power budget of the bird.

Just because something can be done, doesn't mean it should be done. Actions have consequences, and may affect the entire user community of that bird.

OM,

this would require a major rewrite of many parts of WSJT-X, I don't think it can be justified for the small number of users that might be able to make use of it for what is probably not weak signal working on satellites.

Furthermore, on a reliable strong clean fade-free satellite link, there are far more suitable data modes than ones designed for weak signals and the HF environment with pre-formatted rubber stamps.

PSK31 would work well, as does JS8CALL.   Even RTTY if you want to go retro.

Thanks for your response Bill.

I agree that development effort of that magnitude would not be justified, especially when running a second instance of WSJT-X is quite sufficient.
