After reading a bunch of forums, I stumbled across the answer.

While I am using an IC-718, I am not using cat, so there is nothing for the CAT control to talk to. After I set the radio setting to none, every thing worked.
I did basically the same thing in fldigi. I didn't have the radio attached, but the signalink's transmit light lit.
Hi Rick,

thanks for the update, glad you have it working now.

It is my understanding that when using a signal link I should be able to transmit with PTT set to VOX, and manually setting the frequency.
I do have the PTT set to VOX. The CAT control defaults to USB.
When selecting Enable TX the software will show transmit, the radio does NOT go into transmit mode, and the Enable Tx light goes out.

Anyone have any hints on what to do?

Hi Rick,

for your SignaLink USB to key your radio you need three basic items:

  • firstly you need Tx audio going to the SignaLink USB, for that check you have the right audio devices selected in "Settings->Audio", and that the Tx audio levels are correct. See this post for a recipe to correctly set Tx audio levels: https://wsjtx.groups.io/g/main/message/13890 ,
  • your SignaLink USB must be correctly configured to route PTT to your rig's DATA socket using the internal configuration header ,
  • your audio and PTT interface cable must be the right one, fault free and correctly plugged into your rig. With the FT-8x7(D) and FT-718D rigs the mini-DIN plugs are easy to damage, make sure there are no bent or broken pins.

If you suspect lighting damage to the CAT port then it seems likely that the PTT connection on the rig may also be damaged, have you tested it?
