Locked Time Sync Program. #Timesync

I am not happy how windows is syncing my systems internal clock with internet time. Can anyone suggest a internet time syncing utility program?

Hi Tom,

Yes, try Meinberg & then use time.is to verify accuracy.

I use NetTime.  A small program that seems to work well.

From the WSJT 2.3.0 documentation:

  • The built-in Windows facility for time synchronization is usually not adequate. We recommend the program Meinberg NTP Client: see Network Time Protocol Setup for downloading and installation instructions. Recent versions of Windows 10 are now shipped with a more capable Internet time synchronization service that is suitable if configured appropriately. We do not recommend SNTP time setting tools or others that make periodic correction steps, WSJT-X requires that the PC clock be monotonically increasing and smoothly continuous.

Having a PC clock that appears to be synchronized to UTC is not sufficient. “Monotonically increasing” means that the clock must not be stepped backwards. “Smoothly continuous” means that time must increase at a nearly constant rate, without steps. Any necessary clock corrections must be applied by adjusting the rate of increase, thereby correcting synchronization errors gradually.

YES! VERY simple to install, runs in the background. I've been using it as far back as W6CQZ's multi-decoder for JT65.

Tom,

I also use Meinberg NTP. It is free, takes just a few minutes to install, and has kept my shack computer's time synced flawlessly for years.

Glad I found this thread...I've been having some problems as well...I use the Windoze built in sync, I have Meinberg installed (I think although I can not find any icon to lead me to that belief) and I have Dimension 4 and Net Time...invariably, when I start up my browser and look at time.is I find my laptop (vers 8.1 Windoze) is usually (99%) of the time, off by at least 1 second...then I fiddle with the windoze sync and or D4 and the difference drops to .2 or .3 seconds...rarely does it go to 'exact time'...
Just wondering what is going on?

Hi Ron,

do not run more than one time sync application, they will adversely affect each other. If you have Meinberg NTP Client installed then use that. On your Windows Start Menu you will have a entry call Quick NTP Status, use that to monitor the service status.

As others have said, Meinburg is very good.  I closed down my D4 and swapped over to NTP time settings.

I can run the Meinburg software to keep track of what is happening, but if you follow the instructions at https://www.satsignal.eu/ntp/setup.html and then use the "CMD" line (press the Windows button and the letter "R" and press enter and at the prompt that comes up type "ntpq -pn" (make sure you put the space in between 'ntpq' and '-pn'...) and you should see something like this come up in a DOS window.

C:\Users\Owner>ntpq -pn
remote           refid      st t when poll reach   delay   offset  jitter
==============================================================================
-134.0.16.1      114.199.6.79     2 u   53  128  377   14.954   -0.798   0.552
+88.150.161.54   85.199.214.98    2 u   69  128  377   12.555   -0.423  20.348
*195.171.43.10   .PPS.            1 u   24  128  377   19.327   -0.129   0.262
+194.0.5.123     85.199.214.98    2 u   75  128  377   17.416   -0.810   1.286
-93.94.224.67    193.79.237.14    2 u   88  128  377   19.002   +0.252   3.743

That tells you that your PC is now getting its time signal from the ntp servers and you can forget D4 or finding that your PC is driffting in time.

For those folks using the Meinberg NTP app, there's an associated nice little utility called NTP Time Server Monitor that's also downloadable from the Meinberg website.

Its GUI shows all the details about the NTP servers in glorious colour so it's easy to see at a glance which ones are being used by the NTP client on the PC, and there's also the useful facility for showing in graphical form the PC clock's offset from 'real time' over a period of time which makes it very easy to see exactly how the PC's clock has drifted and been adjusted by the app.

Martin,

And this works with the current Meinberg with current W10 PCs?

Well, I uninstalled D4 and Net TIme and downloaded the NTP Monitor...unfortunately the Monitor refuses to start up...it will not allow me to manually start either.

Ah,forget that last reply....I rebooted the laptop (should have done that first) and the monitor seems to be working fine...now it's just a process of figuring it out....😊😊😊😊
thanks for all the help...you all are a real font of knowledge!!!!!

Dave,

Thanks, I just wondered, last update 2008, only up to W8, no obvious recommendation from Meinberg.

Meinberg also running here on Windows 10 computer. Within 2msec at the moment.

The NTP system will work anyway, the Meinburg monitoring software is realy only an additional benefit.  I look at the graphs occasionally and check that there are a number of Stratum 2 and 3 systems in the NTP Status tab.  It is old software now, so I doubt Meinburg will be offering any support for it anymore...

Using the command 'ntpq -pn' in a command prompt will tell you that NTP is running and which systems your PC has heard from.

Hi Alan, yes the Time Server Monitor utility app works fine on 64-bit Win 10 PCs.  Task Manager shows it as a 32-bit app.  From what I can recall, I think the TSM utility needs to be run as administrator if you want to use the app to stop and/or restart the NTP daemon.

I use NetTime, also.  Very simple and straightforward, lightweight, and works like a charm right out of the gate.  Highly recommend.

I found the Meinburg monitoring software refuses to run because “NTP Service not installed”.   I tried it with Run As Administrator, same results.  It appears we need to install the Meinburg NTP service as well.  I did not.  The “Windows Time” service is running.  My windows 10 version is build 19041.867.

I was running Dimension 4.  I recently removed Dim4 to see how inaccurate my PC clock is.  It’s been about 24 hours without Dim4.  My time is 0.027 seconds fast.
