I'm having a hard time getting my IC-705 to maintain connections to WSJT-x. Sometimes the connection will just drop while monitoring, but most of the time the disconnect happens when the radio is transmitting. CAT control and PTT work fine, the audio settings seem correct, and I am running the 2.3.0 version with IC-705 selected as the rig. Also I have the IC-705 upgraded to the new firmware so I am using the FT8 preset. I tried it without the preset also, but I am getting the same issues.
I was using a cheap microUSB cable and I thought that was the problem but today I got a shielded cable with a ferrite bead, plus I put a 2nd ferrite on it.
This laptop running Windows 10 works with WSJT-x just fine while connected to my IC-7300
I searched but cannot find much info on the newest firmware for the radio, or even for WSJT-x 2.3.0 being used on the IC-705. Any help would be appreciated.

The only error comes up after the USB is disconnected, saying that rig control has been lost. I can grab a screenshot of it, if you need, but it would be the same error as just unplugging the usb cable while WSJT-x is running

do you get any error message? If so then please report the message

Jason,
there is no WSJT-X message that say
"rig control has been lost". There is no need to take a screen
capture, as I said, on MS Windows, just hit Ctrl+C as soon as the
error message box pops up. That will copy the whole text of the
error message, including the details, to the Windows clipboard. To
paste the contents of the Windows clipboard to a reply to this
message hit Ctrl+V at the point in the reply you wish to insert
the text.

Jason,
please do what I ask so I can help you.
The Ctrl+C action on a WSJT-X message box is not the same as a
normal select then cut and paste operation. The difference is
there is no select to be done, which is why I stated "hit Ctrl+C
as soon as the message box appears". Clearly you are not capable
of following that simple instruction and therefore you have still
not provided the message details I asked for. At least your space
wasting screen capture image has demonstrated the the message is
not as you initially stated!

I would like to jump in on this thread now that I see the error message seen by Jason. I am running 2.2 on a windows 7 machine using CAT for control of my TS-570S and I see this message often. I've considered asking for a refund for the software :), but so far I've just ignored it and hit the retry.
For me, often is every few hours and it will usually happen when I am just monitoring. I often leave my rig on overnight just to see what what far flung stations are coming through while I am asleep and more often than not, I see this message in the morning.
My primary purpose in jumping in here is just to share that Jason's experience is not an isolated case so that this item gets prioritized appropriately. (I said appropriately, not high priority.)

Ken KC6PUQ

Hi Jason,
OK, some progress at last.
So I can see what is going on please
put the attached file into you WSJT-X configuration files
directory (that is the same as the log files directory on MS
WIndows - "Menu->File->Open log directory"), then restart
WSJT-X, and run a minimal test that demonstrates the issue, then

Hi Jason,
thanks for that. It looks like you have
an RFI issue or something else that is interfering with your USB
connection to the rig. After WSJT-X sends the CAT command to key
your IC-705 no further CAT communication works and it appears that
the virtual COM port provided by the rig also disappears. Perhaps
the rig power supply is inadequate and the voltage is dropping too
low when it transmits.

The IC-705 runs on its own battery, but it also takes an external battery connection, which provides it with a 10-watt output, as opposed to the 5-watt output of the internal battery. This issue happens when using either setup, internal battery or external battery.

...and even though it is only 10 Watts, it's probably a good idea to install a ferrite on that power cable; whether it's a battery or power supply.

If you look on the groups.io Icom IC705 page, you will find RF Interference via the USB port (poorly shielded cables) well described. That RFI disrupts the CAT control. Edd KD5M
|
|
In my original email I mentioned that I have already added 2 ferrites to the shielded USB cable. After doing that, it did indeed help the problem to happen less frequently, but it still happens.
My point about the battery was that the 705 has an internal battery and this issue happens when using the internal or external battery. There is no way to install a ferrite on the internal battery that has no cable leading to it.
If the logs are showing RFI, I will trouble-shoot from that standpoint further. I'll also say that I used this exact same setup at my hunting lease last weekend, the day before WFD, and didn't have any of these issues. This week I am in Galveston, and I brought the 705, same coax and random wire antenna, same tuner, same USB...all of it. And suddenly here I am having these issues. It seems like if it was a faulty cable or RFI, it would have presented itself last week

Hi Jason,
When I spoke of the ferrite, I was of course speaking about the external battery cable.
You should try tx'ing into a dummy load & see if any rfi goes away.
That's the one potential issue of the 705, with a plastic case... I wonder if ICOM installed much shielding inside to compensate for not having a metal enclosure.

Yes sir - the dummy load I used earlier today did indeed stop the disconnects. I just don't understand what I have changed when moving from one location last week to another this week because I used it for a couple of hours on Friday 1/29 and found no issues at all.
I have joined the IC-705 Groups.io forum and I am searching for the topic in there.
