January 2021 marks the first anniversary of this group's merger with the old WSJT Yahoo group.  The merger went quite well.  I tried to minimize group rules and overall members have been remarkable respectful and insightful in their posts.  I have had a few concerns reported to me and a review of those concerns has prompted a few changes, effective immediately. 

No personal insults, be polite when expressing opinions that differ from others.
No items "for sale" .
No expression of political viewpoints, keep the messages focused on the software.
This is a worldwide group made of many different cultures, faiths, values, and ethnic groups. Please exhibit tolerance, respect and kindness. 
Threads that become expansive or begin to form a circular argument may be moderated or "locked" by moderators after a period of time so that they do not dominate the group. 
No promoting the use of the WSJTX software in a manner that violates the author's copyright terms. 
Moderating staff exercise exclusive discretion over all posted content,  Please report any message that you feel moderating staff may have missed and required a review of possible inappropriate content. 

Please note we have had a few concerns where people assume that myself and other moderators are part of the WSJT-X development team.  That is not the case.  We are totally independent of that team.  Members of the team do use this group and some even reply to questions. Please be aware that the development team members respond as a courtesy and are under no obligation.  In addressing moderators and members of the development team , please keep the ethos of "open source" software.  That includes Transparency, Collaboration, Community. The moderators and some of the development team have had "demands" placed on them from a handful of users who seem to expect the same level of accountability as one would expect from a tort duty or relationship. 

Effective immediately "tags" are required for each post.  This will help address the concerns some members have expressed about topics being repetitive and some members failing to use the search feature before posting a question. Hashtags also help us with moderator duties.

FYI :  REgarding tags or hashtags for this group

Hashtags are words that start with '#'. In the case of Groups.io, they only apply to the subject of a message. So, if you send a message to your group with the subject 'This is a sample message #test', the message will be categorized with the hashtag '#test'.

You can search the archives by hashtags. And you can set hashtags so that any messages tagged with them will be deleted automatically after a specified period of time.

 

 

Muting Hashtags

An advantage of tagging messages is that members can mute hashtags that they're not interested in. If someone is not interested in the #FT4 tag   they don't ever have to see any of those messages.

Muting or unmuting topics and hashtags

 

To be able to apply muting, you must select All Messages in the Message Selection area of the Advanced Preferences panel for your subscription to the group. Also, be aware that group owners or moderators might set some hashtags so they cannot be muted.

If you receive individual email messages from the group, the footer in each message contains a Mute This Topic link as well as links to mute any hashtags associated with that topic. If you receive message digests, a Mute Topic link is at the end of each message in the digest. Clicking these links takes you to the Groups.io website, where you can confirm or cancel the action.

When you are viewing messages on the group’s website, in either Topics view or Messages view, you can click the Mute This Topic button that is displayed at the top of each topic page or individual message’s page to mute that topic.

To mute specific hashtags (so you stop receiving messages in topics that are tagged with those hashtags), you can use any of these methods:

• In a group email message, click Mute for any hashtag listed in the message footer.
• On the Hashtags page on the group’s website, click the Mute/Notify button (or link, if you are viewing the page in List View) in the hashtag. On the resulting page, in the Email panel, click the Mute Topics checkbox, and select a length of time from the Mute Duration list. Then click the Update button at the bottom of the page.
• On an individual hashtag’s page, click the Mute button under the hashtag’s name near the top of the page. On the resulting page, click the Mute Topics checkbox, and select a length of time from the Mute Duration list. Then click the Update button at the bottom of the page.
• When you are viewing a topic on the group’s website, hashtags are displayed next to the topic’s subject line. In that view, you can click the down arrow in a hashtag to display a dropdown menu, then select Mute from that menu. On the resulting page, click the Mute Topics checkbox, and select a length of time from the Mute Duration list. Then click the Update button at the bottom of the page.

Tip: When you mute a hashtag, consider setting a duration period (as opposed to leaving the hashtag muted forever) because the same hashtag could be applied to future topics that you might be interested in.

Note: If a moderator has set a hashtag to Special (meaning messages with that hashtag are sent as special notices), you cannot mute that hashtag because special notices cannot be muted.

To unmute topics or hashtags that you have muted, use any of the methods mentioned above. The button or link will be labeled “Unmute” instead of “Mute.”

I just want to make sure that I understand this new process.
When I tried to put a hashtag in my subject line of a new message and did not select a hashtag from the existing list, my message would not post and I got a message telling me that only moderators can add new hashtags.  Is this the correct and expected behavior?  I am asking because this is not what I expected from the example showing "'This is a sample message #test'".

I just want to make sure that I am using the process correctly and that the tag I use must come from the list of existing tags.

Sorry to but in but - that means, I think, that those of us who never use the web interface can't use the tags, unless we know the list.

Looks like I'll only be lurking from now on - Oh well, that's progress I suppose.

Just a side issue - I never post via the web page always just send an e-mail - Adding a hash tag is not an issue but if you can only enter certain tags that may be a problem as 100% mail users will have no idea of the tags to use.
How do you suggest users handle that? - you may find everyone just uses #special (or whatever they remember) then that defeats the process.

Anything without a tag gets bounced for moderation.  Each tag is subject to varying intervention and processing. This helps maintain  control of the message flow and allow users to also filter what they see (or don't wish to see)
