Locked W10 Heads UP
Henry Pfizenmayer
Just a heads if all of a sudden WSJT audio settings go to pot. YMMV This evening I updated to the latest N1MM file - and a few minutes later - the WSJT quit working and was reporting audio issues . So I went back one version of N1MM . No difference - WSJT still hosed. SO NOT N!MM. I also have a stand alone WSJT install I use without N1MM -that was hosed as well. An hour of W10 twiddling of the USB codec selections for my K3S and WSJT settings etc resulted in nothing. THEN I looked at latest W10 updates. Found an entire page of so called "successful" KB4023057 updates - one a day from 9/30 thru 10/28 every day !!!!!!! (EVEN THOUGH I HAVE UPDATES ALWAYS DELAYED 7 DAYS ) . Anyhow after some sleuthing which I wont go into now -I found a way to delete that update (the normal uninstall would not work ) I deleted that update and everything immediately returned to normal .W10 VER 1909 If you Google KB4023057 there are many other issues that show up in many other ways. Again YMMV - just a possibility. I have a second W!0 VER 1909 computer that has this update (only shows one time instead of a page full ) and it works OK... Hank K7HP FWIW Below are also some more error messages that N1MM/WSJT combo version was showing-I would stil get this error after closing WSJT then N1MM and rebooting computer and re starting N1MM then WSJT |

Hi Hank, Thanks for again showing how ms updates ARE THE MALWARE! NOT JUST for ham radio either! Seems like every few days another tech media outlet tells of horror stories of bricked computers, lost data, etc. I am still surprised that there has been a major class action lawsuit with a cease & desist order - making ms fully test their "fixes" that only make things much worse. The simple fix is to turn off & not accept ms's malware "updates"! As I have stated before & others have concurred, dedicate a computer for ham radio, disallow updates & don't connect that computer to the internet! No updates, no internet, no headaches! Simple - straight forward! 73 - John - N7GHZ On Thu, Oct 29, 2020, 12:11 AM Hank Pfizenmayer <pfizenmayer@q.com> wrote:

These error messages are not being caused by a change in windows. This happens at times when WSJT does not shut down properly. If you open your Task Manager after you get this error you will find a program running “jt9.exe”. Close that program in the task manager and things will open correctly. Or you can restart your computer. It is on my list of things to add to N1MM to look for this after WSJTX closes and close it for the user…

I agree with Rick. Proper application closure at the end of the day or session and proper computer shut-down procedure is likely key to many problems. Additionally, I've found that some applications do not exit cleanly. Otherwise, leaving fragments of data in memory.
As to Windows 10 and automatic updates, after reading the messages above, I initiated WSJT-X and all was normal. And yes, this computer accepts and installs all Windows 10 updates automatically. Sorry folks, but it looks like I've missed all the "fun".........no pun intended. 73 Bob, K4TAX |

I'm really beginning to think maybe it would be best to have a dedicated shack computer that you don't do financials on on an older version of Windows or Linux. Windows 10 seems to be a nightmare. I run 8 and be danged if I'll go to 10.

10 is stable so long as you don't go
installing all sorts of games and rubbish on it
i run 10 version 2004, all the patches
and its fine, i ban chrome browser (resource hogging pile of
google spyware) limit my browser tabs, and only open apps i need
biggest issues relate to using social
media with all the ads which have a percentage of targeted malware
as the crooks know its a cheap way to get clickbait ads pointing
to malicious sites to a huge audience bypassing spam filters on
email
that and AV products that get into all
corners of the OS like symantec / mcaffee
if you are going to use a PC running
win 10, wipe it and start again then only install radio apps, no
email, no social media and no games (candy crush etc) and it will
just work
and don't forget only download you
radio apps from ham sites, not from these "free" download manager
sites as you can't gaurantee you are getting the latest version,
or that it don't have "extras" installed by default

I dedicate a PC to my ham radio. Only ham radio apps run on the computer. It is NOT used for anything else. I use WSJT-X, GridTracker and HRD along with the Brave browser (very secure and with no plug-ins installed) when I need to update an app. The PC runs Win10 and is automatically kept up to date. Older versions of Windows is a security nightmare.

I have a dedicated computer for ham radio, running CentOS 8.2 Linux. I build everything from project source code, so I know what I am getting and can customize it to my specific operation. Oh... and it's free.

Kubuntu 18 Linux. It is very polite about updates. I usually run them about every couple of weeks or so. Haven't had it break anything yet. I let the laptop run 24/7. Every time I go to the shack it just works.
I do have the Win10 load for that laptop stashed away on a hard drive somewhere. Because I paid for it, dammit. It has maybe a half hour runtime on it (not counting update time). Maybe I'll frame it and hang it on the wall. 73 -Jim NU0C On Thu, 29 Oct 2020 13:12:29 -0500 "Jeff Stillinger via groups.io" <kb6ibb@...> wrote: I have a dedicated computer for ham radio, running CentOS 8.2 Linux. Ubuntu Linux 18.04 has not given me any trouble. The GUI is quite good and my necessary terminal commands are few. Win10 still has the dreaded "blue circle of death" and marketing BS galore. I only use Win10 when the application I want will not run under Linux and there is no Linux alternative. 73, Paul, KE7UAE On Thu, Oct 29, 2020 at 11:36 AM Jim Shorney <jshorney@...> wrote:

Kubuntu is Ubuntu with the KDE desktop. Very visually attractive, IMO the polar opposite of anything MS has done in recent years, and very customizable. I have the animations shut off because that stuff just annoys me.... :D

YMMV is Your Mileage May Vary, a social media trope meaning you may get different results. It means "your mileage may vary", a way of saying that what works for me may not work for you in your specific situation.
