I tried looking through release notes and the forum and didn't see anything specific here. This may be a stupid question, but I feel like I am having more success making contacts with 2.1.2 than I am with 2.2.1 and am wondering if that's because 2.2.1 won't work with stations still using 2.1.2 or older? I know one of the big enhancements was the timing so thought maybe that had something to do with it. Thanks for any info and all the work that is done on this software and technology, it's amazing.

Hi OM,

in general yes with one small exception, the EU VHF Contest Mode has a change in the FT4/FT8/MSK144 protocol that is not backwards compatible. The timing changes you refer to are only related to when the FT8 decoder starts decoding and have no bearing on the protocol sent on air.

I'm still using 2.1.2 on 144/432 as my laptop is Vista and 2.2.1 is only for W7 and above.

I'm still making contacts OK. Had several Sporadic Es QSOs on 144 this Summer so far, plus all the normal tropo' ones.

The 2.2.1 version has a better decoder than 2.1.2, so I expect QSOs between people both using that version will be slightly higher than mixed version QSOs. But I've no proof of that.

There are some incompatabilities with Contest modes, but for everyday use they work together.
