Locked IC-718, SignalLink and WSJT-X

I am trying to help OM with his 718 rig and he has a SignalLink but no CI-V/CAT cable. Does he need the CAT cable to transmit or does the SignalLink cause the radio to transmit? He doesn’t care about automatic control when switching between bands

The SignaLink-USB has a built-in VOX circuit that keys the PTT.  It is possible to use WSJT-x without CI-V BUT you won’t be able to use “fake it” split function in order to keep your audio signal near the center of the transmit filter pass band. In that case I would limit myself to using the higher (above 1500 Hz) frequencies for transmit.

I have the same setup at home. I use TX Hold and keep my eye on the waterfall to be sure I am transmitting on a clear frequency. Can you please explain the “fake it” split function and why I should stay above 1500hz?

“Fake it” split function automatically adjusts your Tx VFO frequency on the radio to keep your actual transmit tones between 1500Hz and 2000Hz. Keeping your Tx tones above 1500Hz ensures that *if* you generate any audio harmonics that they will above 3000Hz and thus outside of the transmitter filter so that they will not be transmitted. Of course, having WSJT-x shift your VFO frequency requires that you have CI-V or CAT enabled.

If you don’t have CI-V or CAT then it is best to stay above 1500Hz on transmit to avoid the harmonic situation.

Thanks for the explanation. I hope to get CAT working- just ordered the appropriate cable. In the mean time I will observe your precaution about the transmit frequency.
