Locked FT8 Logging Problem!
W4AS
I agree with you Lance. If you’re on 6 meters for example, and there is an opening to EU, then skipping Tx1 is fine, since you can tell where someone is based on their call. But if you are calling me from the US, I have no idea where you are if you don’t send your grid.

Also, regardless of what some have said here, I don’t see the problem in someone calling me when I’m working someone else (so long as it’s not on my TX frequency). When I’m done with the QSO, I’ll do my best to get back to the other callers - but please don’t call on my TX frequency, that makes decoding very difficult, if not impossible, if there are multiple callers. 73 de Sebastian, W4AS On May 11, 2020, at 12:52 PM, Lance Collister, W7GJ <w7gj@q.com> wrote: |

If it were EU VHF contest, then at least there you can fill the missing information into the received report box. I think that it accepted also e.g. R-10 or -15, which are not in the EU VHF format 539001. I have had that and managed to log the QSO. Cannot exactly remember how, hi! 73, Reino OH3mA -----Original Message-----

Hi Reino, Yes, my point was this: I was unable to log the contact at all. Yes, they probably were not in the contest - they probably just needed my grid. But the way WSJT-X is/was set up, it was impossible to log the contact :-( It would be GREAT if such a contact without a grid was NOT added to the contest log, but you were not prevented from logging the contact in the regular log :-) On a somewhat related subject, hopefully more people - at least on the VHF and UHF bands - will be encouraged to call with TX#1 (with their grid locator) so I can see where they are! Last night I found I needed to move the antenna around to complete with the weaker callers, but if they didn't call with their grid square, I had no idea where to point for them :-( As the propagation fades, their signal faded out and they disappeared before I could figure out where to move the antenna. Steve, Now I read the whole chain and understood your point. Perhaps they did not even wanted participate the contest, but only wished to get a QSO with you? I have had that kind of ‘nuisance’ as those contact do not count as they will not send their log in and of course it is not a valid contest QSO due to the missing locator, hi! 73, Reino OH3mA |

I guess I wasn't clear enough, Reino....they sent a signal report as the first transmission....there is no signal report in NA VHF Contest mode.

Roger,
That's life. By the way do you have means how to get the grid from a special call station? Of course you don't need to work those at all, hi! 73, Reino OH3mA Subject: Re: [WSJTX] FT8 Logging Problem! And a surprising number of them send RRR and later 73 so they're not actually saving a cycle. I like to receive the grid so I treat them as in incomplete QSO. I wondered why people didn't use the "proper sequence". I like to plot my contacts on a map - I use an API available from DxAtlas, and the centre of a prefix area is not good enough. I also download contact details from eQSL and LotW which a lot of times updates gridsquares to the 6 character version. 73 Phil GM3ZZA On 10 May 2020 16:46, Reino Talarmo <reino.talarmo@...> wrote:

Hi Steve, Sending message 2 as the first message does not indicate a contest mode at all. Those users just want to save one timeslot. Reino OH3mA

I had one case where a station (not in contest mode) called me using message 2, so he never sent his grid. As I understand it, WSJT-X is supposed to switch the non-contest-mode station into contest mode when a contest-mode exchange is received, but this combination of events didn't produce a valid contest QSO. Not sure if there is a software fix. |

I think those of us who are interested in VHF contests need to put on a big educational push so that those VHFers who are not particularly interested in contests learn about contest modes and how and when to use them....they only give up a signal report. I think the same is true of HF digital contesting, but I have spent less time at that and don't have as much of a feel for how many contest-mode compatibility problems exist there. 73, Steve VE3SMA |

I noticed during the 6m sprint today that if I was in the NA Contest mode and I was called by someone who was NOT in the NA Contest mode, the program would not let me log the contact because I did not send a numbered report.
So, in order to be able to log the contacts, I switched OUT of contest mode and was able to log the contacts even when stations called me who WERE in contest mode. It sure would be nice if the logging would work for both situations! Maybe if it doesn't see a numbered report being sent, it could log how strong the station was on his last transmission or something. It just doesn't seem to want to log the grid square as a report...
