Locked Error in Sound Output: An Error open the audio outout device has occurred??
Ed Oxer, W8EO <oxer@...>
What is this? This message appears randomly. I have read all the info on the Web about this and am no further ahead in addressing this.
Sometimes the app works well but at other times this message appears even when the app is working. Sometimes the message shuts down the radio. After alot of "horsing" around I can fix this problem but with no degree of consistency. In advance thanks for any help. |

Try using a different aerial, dummy load, or reduced power and see if that eliminates the issue. 73 Bill G4WJS. |

You could also only use cables that have chokes on them.

These are what I use, no problems in my shack. https://www.amazon.ca/Hi-Speed-Cable-Ferrite-Chokes-3-Ft/dp/B008VOPCGY/ref=sr_1_1?crid=XE1SX7A7UMVB&keywords=tripp+lite+usb+2.0+hi-speed+a%2Fb+cable+with+ferrite+chokes&qid=1586701608&sprefix=usb+cables+a+to+b+with+choke%2Caps%2C178&sr=8-1 John VE3KKQ ---------- Original Message ---------- |

Please share where you obtained these and any other model/ spec information. Many of us could take advantage of this information.

Of course, you probably have to take the info down, and then go to the US site, Amazon.com Neil, KN3ILZ On 4/12/2020 10:46 AM, Neil Zampella

I got an assortment from DX Engineering (look under filters). Using a toroid on the USB cable with many wraps. Have snap-on for the mouse and keyboard. Wrap as many times as you can. I think the suppression increases by the square of the turns. I use Mix 31. Work great. 73, Herb WB8ASI

There are no "specs" as to the type of chokes used. All chokes

There are many types of chokes, here he is referring to a ferrite choke, the "spec" would refer to the mix number. 73 de NØIGU

The cables in the link only go through the core once, which causes the effectiveness of the choke to peak around 150MHz. If you need a choke that works on the HF bands, you need multiple turns through Fair-Rite #31 material. See k9yc.com/RFI-Ham.pdf for a tutorial on how chokes work. http://k9yc.com/KillingReceiveNoise.pdf is a tutorial on finding and killing RX noise, and the chokes described in it work equally well for RF pickup on cables. On 4/12/2020 7:58 AM, Jim Bacher - WB8VSU wrote: Plus with good cables the products would pass without ferrites.Passing FCC Rules does not mean a product won't produce noise that we hear on the MF and HF bands because the tests are not meaningful -- they don't expose the design/construction errors that put RF noise on interconnecting cables. The most common error is "The Pin One Problem," whereby the cable shield goes through the shielding enclosure without being bonded to it. Howeverenvironment. Ferrites are generally needed because 99.9% of products are built with "Pin One Problems." I do agree with the observation that many (most?) commercially available cables are of poor quality, and without sacrificing one by cutting it open, there's no easy way to evaluate them. 73, Jim K9YC |

Hello everyone,
Tnx for all the feedback. I tried the recommendations about turning the rf down and that seems to have done the trick. At 20 watts the problem is gone. I have some ferrite on the coax to my less than ideal antenna. My home qth is Lansing MI and we are in an apartment, 3rd floor, 35 foot balcony which is surrounded by rebar and cement. I am limited to a 20 dipole which is very close to the rig. I don't recall having this problem at home with a cushcraft r5 and g5rv antennas. The setup actually does pretty well on with a clear shot at the ocean up the East coast and into Europe. |

Hi Ed, USB communication between PC and TRX is not reliable if the antenna is too close. QRP is certainly a solution but you may want to try this: 73 and GL,

Indeed, ALL equipment that is part of the station should have its chassis bonded to all other equipment in the station, and to station ground, AND every ground in our homes should be bonded together. This is fundamental good engineering practice, and in most parts of the world it is the LAW. There is detailed advice in this set of slides for talks I've given at Pacificon, Visalia, and to multiple clubs. http://k9yc.com/GroundingAndAudio.pdf It is specifically written for North American building Codes (Law); differences between codes in various parts of the world are addressed in this "white paper" for professional audio and video contractors. http://k9yc.com/SurgeXPowerGround.pdf 73, Jim K9YC |
