Locked OK Please help

I have everything working finally, Just don't understand the waterfall part and when and where to TX. I have read several books, and I am still at a loss. I can receive fine. I can TX everything is showing I have a signal going out with audio. Just don't quite know if I have to click on one of the spaces between 100 and 3000 and if so, how do I know where? I am starting to be able to tell where there are signals to receive. by the yellow lines. John M. Sokol K9JMS |

Find a clear place to put your red bracket to TX. You will Recieve everything regardless where you're at. The green bracket will be a specific freq. What band you on? I'll get you on 40m. See you there.

John, You want to select an area to TX in that is blank; i.e. dark, so that you are not talking over other operators. In theory, you can choose any section that is clear. I prefer to keep it "in between the lines..." if you drag & set the width of the waterfall to show about 100 to 2600 hz; that will give you 50hz wide tick marks. Since that is the width of FT8, it makes it easy to line up. (Again, not abs. Necessary, just a cleaner look. The waterfall shows the 15 second slices (FT8); 2 slices make for the full 30 second cycle. It helps if in settings, you turn on the separation lines (green). The Red sideways 'C' is where your TX frquency is. The green is receive freq. They do not have to line up (in fact, it is better if you Tx on a different freq than whom you are talking with. It really doesn't matter where the green rx cursor is, as anyone calling you will show up in the right side panel; except that where the green is will display all msgs on that freq. It is also helpful to lock the TX freq. as that will keep others usually from talking over you as they we see a vertical line of constant use. If you bounce all over, it makes it more like you & others will collide & interfere with each other. Hope this helps 73 - John - N7GHZ On Sat, Mar 28, 2020, 7:07 PM John Sokol <k9jms.fl@...> wrote:

A couple of things. Be careful with the "blank" space in the waterfall as it can be difficult (depending on settings, your eyes, etc) to see "weak" stations. A station coming in to your station at -24 can be almost invisible on the waterfall. Unless I am double clicking on stations (TX freq not locked)
which will move me to the other station's frequency I watch at
least two consecutive slices for any activity before using the
frequency. I look for any hint on the waterfall and any decodes.
For FT8 the closest station to the frequency I think I will use
needs to be either 50 Hz above or below the frequency. If that
criteria isn't satisfied I will try to find another frequency that
does satisfy that criteria. Listening to only one slice can put
you on top of someone else. Regrettably, I see the latter all too
often (and not necessarily strong signal on weak signal). One danger of double clicking is if you call and work station A
and station B calls you can end up working B on station A's
frequency - not nice. Ctrl click on B will put you on B's
frequency. When done with A you should not be calling CQ or
another station without changing freq to a vacant freq. Moving on
to a DXpedition frequency or rare station will not endear you to
others. Good luck. 73, Larry W6NWS On 3/28/2020 10:40 PM, JP Tucson, AZ

John -
As a general rule, set the green (receive) marker between 5oo and 1,000 Hz and the red (transmit) marker between 1,000 and 2000 Hz. This will work in all general situations, and DX stations using Fox/Hound (F./H) mode cannot hear you if you're transmitting below 1,000 Hz. Also, suggest you don't transmit on the same frequency the other station is transmitting on, and always keep the "Hold Tx Freq" box checked. And for those that may question the above, I know there is much more to it, but these should be good starting points until John has a bit more experience with FT8. Just my 2 cents worth. Also, keep in mind that stations can be on either Even or Odd

time slots and not interfere with each other. If you are transmitting in the Even time slot, someone else can be in the Odd time slot and everything will be just fine. However, this assumes that each station does not call on the same frequency according to the recommended mode of operating. So, for example, on 1000 Hz station A is on the Even time slot and station B is on the Odd time slot. Then, on 2000 Hz, station X is on Even and station Y is on Odd. A can then QSO with Y and B can then QSO with X without anyone interfering with each other. This is all the more reason to NOT call a station on THEIR frequency. You don't have to worry about calling on Even or Odd since the software will take care of that for you. If you see a station calling CQ on Odd, the software will automatically have you make your call on Even when you click on that station. Also, make sure you have "Hold TX Frequency" checked so you do not call on the other station's frequency. GL/73, Bob K8BL On Sunday, March 29, 2020, 07:52:30 AM EDT, Larry Knain <w6nws@...> wrote:

Without that you are in danger of becoming one of the many poor signals spread across the data mode slots with multiple audio harmonics being transmitted. If you do not have CAT control and enabled one of the split
operating options of WSJT-X then you should stick to Tx audio
offsets between 1500 Hz and ~2400 Hz and use the VFO dial to
communicate with stations using lower or higher offset
frequencies. 73 |
