Locked Yaesu FT-897 D

John K9JMS

Please bere with me. Been a ham a long time, new to digital. I have an Yaesu ft-897D. My connection to my computer is via a SignaLink. I ordered the correct mode for my radio. #SLCAB6PM. Confirmed twice that I have the jumpers correct. The SignaLink connects through the radios Data jack. Here is where the problem lies. When I go to setting in WSJTX program and enter my radio, it will not let me chose the Rear/Data button. Seems to be grayed out on all radio models. When I click the Test CAT button I get an error and Test PTT is grayed out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am very excited to try to enter the digital world.

Hi John,

the SignaLink USB is not a CAT interface. It provides audio in and out between you rig and PC and it has a digital VOX circuit that keys the rig when Tx audio is present. That's it. For CAT control then you need a suitable CAT cable that goes between the other min-DIN socket and a serial port or a USB port utilizing a USB to serial adapter.

You can operate without CAT control with some limitations, just set the WSJT-X options "Settngs->Radio->Rig" to  "None" and "Settings->Radio->PTT Method" to "VOX".

I also have an FT-897D, with SignaLink USB audio I/O and PTT using Data port, and control with CAT cable at the "CAT/Linear" port.
My WSJTX settings page, on both MacBook Pro and RaspberryPi installs, also shows the "Transmit Audio Source" radio buttons greyed out and "Front/Mic" button selected. However, TX audio is indeed fed via the DATA port regardless of this non-indication in the Radio Settings tab.
As Bill mentioned, you won't show a good CAT test as you're not using CAT control, yet.

I use the CAT/Linear port to run my LDG AT-897 tuner. Can I run from the CAT out on the tuner? I assume that is the purpose of it.

Can someone send me a link to a viable CAT/Liner to USB cable that will work in this situation please? My google searches are coming up with CAT 5 cables and kitty litter,

I also use the CAT port on the radio to run my LDG AT-897 tuner. And yes you can connect the computers CAT into the CAT out on the tuner.

You can also CAT through the front mic jack.

When the FT-817, 857 and 897 first appeared on the scene, there were quite a few
websites that explored the various ports and capabilities of these rigs which
the last two in the series (857/897) were beefed up versions of the 817 as quite
a bit of the circuitry is common between the three.

Hopefully some of the web sites are still up.

Had a great time mobile and fixed with my 857, still have it and the ATAS-120
though now the rig is a bit of a dust collector since the FTdx-3000 arrived in
the shack.

Fun rig the 857, enjoy it.

Yes you can. That is exactly what I do. All you need is a cable with the right DIN connectors. Have fun! 73 de Paul W1PR
