Locked No decode, waterfall compressed

Joe Wallace, W7RNX

Upgraded WSJT-X to ver. 2.1.2 and JTAlert to 2.16.1.  Problems:

1.  WSJT-X waterfall does not display properly and program is not decoding.  There is no spacing showing the time intervals during decoding on the waterfall and the decoding is not appearing in the "band activity" window.

2.  I can not get the JTAlert program to coordinate between WSJT-X and ACLog.  prior to the upgrades, both programs worked fine and coordinated (sent log info) to the logging program.

I have attempted several program changes (checked the boxes, etc.) in both programs.

My operations equipment include IC-735 with RigBlaster interface to HP Laptop running Windows 10 and the WSJTX and JTAlert programs (versions as noted above).

Also, Fldigi program appears to work fine, thus indicating no issues with Laptop sound card?

Any suggestions would be helpful.  Failing that, I will be reloading older versions (if possible) to get back on the air.  It would appear that upgrades always comes with problems rather than solving problems.

Hi Joe,

the Wide Graph control "N Avg" controls the speed of the waterfall display, decrease it to get wider period spacing.

The most common reasons for failures to decode are PC clock inaccuracy and incorrect audio device selection in "Settings->Audio".

Tried everything:  reloaded v2.1.2, reset audio setting, restarted and confirmed Meinberg NTP (clock), adjusted sound card audio settings on Laptop, set "N Avg" to 1 and tried other settings as well,  adjusted Bins/pixel,etc. STILL no decode and waterfall is still compressed.  I am seeing signals on the waterfall and hearing good audio from the radio itself.  The waterfall visuals are still very compressed and are not being decoded.  Also tried several bands (80m, 40m, 20, 10m, 17m).  Tried various squelch level settings.  still no success.  What am I missing?  Until this issue started a couple weeks ago, I had no issues and have made hundreds of FT8 contacts using WSJT-X and on numerous bands.

This same issue here and I had to use "Administer" setting to get it to work on my computer.  Never figured out what was wrong.

I sometimes see the same symptoms when the PC is running other programs that consume CPU power, memory, or disk access.

To see if this is the case, I would recommend restarting the computer and closing any other software that may be running.

I have tried everything!!!!!!  Even updated the drivers for the sound cards today.  Did several re-installs of the WSJT-X program and the JTAlert program, restarted the laptop several times.  Even RTFM and followed through the steps for setting up the various programs..  AND I STILL HAVE NO DECODE (or occasionally intermittent decode) AND THE DAMN WATERFALL IS STILL COMPRESSED even after changing various settings several times.
I am not a computer nerd or guru, but have a pretty good understanding of being able to adjust settings, enable and disable programs, etc.
I have read many of the related posts on this forum and have tried many of the suggestions.  It appears that others are having similar problems, but some replies appear to have been simple guesses or uneducated suggestions based upon who knows what!
Pardon my ranting.
On February 10 I made 6 FT8 contacts and between February 3 and 9, had 20 contacts logged with no issues at all.  (My logging program is N3FJP' ACLog, ver 6.6).  Since 2/10 I have only been able to make 5 FT8 contacts in between the NO DECODE and COMPRESSED WATERFALL incidents that are still occurring after many attempts at adjustments and reloads as noted above.
I hope (for my sake as well as other WSJT users) that someone somewhere (Source Forge, etc.) is paying attention and is ACTUALLY working on the problem.  I am not alone as is apparent by the number of problems other Hams are reporting on this and other forums.

Hi Joe,

Just to add,

My last valid FT8 QSO's were 2020-03-22.  A windows 10 update occurred, for me, on  2020-03-23 . Since then I can only use MSK144.
Like you, I have tried lots of settings, microphone testing, installing new sound card, and reinstall WSJT-X.

Some have reported success with uninstalling latest windows 10 update. I tried that, but in my case, my windows 10 did not un-install cleanly. I get error that parts of the up-date could not be uninstalled.

That scared me, but my system still runs and I can still run MSK144.

Check your Microphone Privacy Settings
The Windows 10 virus broke this on a recent update and you need to go to permissions to fix it.
May not be your problem but is for some.

Joe, I went back and reread your previous posts and have two questions for you.

1. You said you had Meinberg running, but you didn't say you confirmed it was working correctly by going to https://time.is to confirm it was working. Did you check it on that website?

2. Besides the other things mentioned, make sure your anti-virus program is not scanning the audio directory. Have you done that?

Unless the others who say they are having issues bring it to this discussion list, the developers will not "hear" their issues. Back when I worked, one of IT issues I had were people were complaining to everyone about computer issues, except those who could actually help them. They need to be on this list to get help.

I have this problem sporadically....not sure what causes it. FT8 will run along fine
for a long time and then suddenly the waterfall is compressed and there are no
decodes. Sometimes it can be fixed by rebooting the program. Although lately, I have
had to reboot the computer and restart the program to get it to work properly. It
certainly is frustrating when you are trying to make a contact and this happens :-(
I wonder if it might be some Windows 10 process running in the background that is
causing this...

Anyway, I sure hope somebody can figure out a cure!  GL and VY 73, Lance

On FT8, it is like something suddenly changed the Wide Graph setting from N AVG 6
(where I usually run it, so I can see the weakest signals) to N AVG 1. All the lines
between sequences are all jammed up close together and the decoding doesn't work.

I have now gone through the list of Windows 10 PRIVACY SETTINGS and turned off almost
everything. It is especially enlightening to see all the junk that was running in the
background! Since I just use this computer for monitoring with WSJTX, the only thing
I now have running on it is SDR-Console Version 3.0.21, WSJT-X Version 2.1.2, JTALERT
Version 2.16.1 and Norton Antivirus.  At the moment, it seems to working
great...hopefully the culprit has been blocked ;-)

Hi Joe,

Are you sure you are NOT in FT4 mode by accident?

I Did that once in the wee hours of the morning & half asleep...

Mode on bottom line (below the wsjt-x clock) should be blue & say FT8!

Because ft4 runs in only 7.5 seconds per half cycle, it takes on that 'compressed' look.

Hope this helps.

I will try to address the latest remarks/suggestions.
Time.is:  correct time shown, Mienburg working fine
Audio stuff (speakers, microphone, sound cards) excluded from virus scanning
WSJT-X and JTAlert both excluded from virus scanning
Definitely on FT8, not "accidentally" switched to FT4, Also, when switching to other modes, am seeing the same compressed waterfall situation.
Have tried various " N-avg" settings and get the same result, compressed waterfall and no decode.
As previously stated by me, every time I attempted different settings, downloaded new drivers, etc., etc., I always restarted the programs AND the computer.

Regarding "turning off" stuff running in the background on the computer;  where can one get a list of what can and should not be turned off?  Obviously nothing from Microsoft would be worth looking at because they would not want "their" stuff turned off.  In Task Manager, there is a boat load of running background processes.  How does one know what is safe to turn off or disable?  I would not hesitate to turn things off if I knew it wouldn't stop my computer from working.

Joe,  Try this, make either screen shots or write down all settings in WSJT-X.  Close WSJT-X.
Go here and delete this file, C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\WSJT-X\WSJT-X.ini
This .ini is your configuration settings.  You will loose all settings.
Install ver 2.1.2 into here, C:\K1JT\wsjtx2.1.2  where K1JT is a folder and wsjtx2.1.2 is also a folder.
Create the K1JT folder on the root drive then create the wsjtx2.1.2 folder in the K1JT folder.
Install ver 2.1.2 into the wsjtx2.1.2 folder.  The install will create a new shortcut icon on the desktop
that should point to C:\K1JT\wsjtx2.1.2\wsjtx\bin\wsjtx.exe
Run WSJT-X via this shortcut, redo all settings, report back with findings.

Hi Joe.

Cant help with the ‘main’ theme of your enquiry as I am not seeing anything like it.

But, for looking at what starts and runs from start I use CCleaner FREE.

https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/download?source=cpc&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgpLxk-u76AIVCbLtCh11Nw0zEAAYASABEgJIX_D_BwE

It has options for disabling software at start-up in various groups and works a treat.

Hi Lance,

I had/have a similar problem with decodes. Look at the attached screen shot to see if yours looks like mine. When my waterfall looks like the signals at the top, I get no decodes. When my waterfall looks like the signals at the bottom, I get good decodes.

I don't have a fix, but I do have a workaround. I have no idea why this works, but it does. If I go to Control Panel - Sound - Recording  and single click on the Microphone for the audio device I use for WSJT-X (USB Audio Codec in my case), then my traces on the waterfall become "focused" and I get good decodes. I don't have to change anything in the Audio Properties. Just having the window open fixes my problem. The screenshot shows my waterfall without the sound window open and then with the sound window open.

I am using Windows 10 Home with updates turned ON and I am using the current version of WSJT-X. I do not use JTAlert. In my case, audio from my Icom IC-7300 goes into my laptop using the USB cable.

Good Luck.

Hi Steve,

The waterfall looks like your audio sampling rate goes wild or fussy. I could happen in A/D converter in the rig of in Windows for some reason. Clicking the audio tab re-starts the USB audio path, I assume. Just for check have you selected in Windows 16 bits sampling at 64 k (DVD quality)?

Lance -- WSJT-X works with 48kHz 16-bit. Check the audio interface you're using to make sure that is what is set. Something might have changed it.

Thanks Jim, my bad.
It is interesting that the change is in the middle of 15 s period. The time compression indicates that there are also missing audio frames. Is it possible that USB link is intermittent, bad? On the other hand the fail mode looks stable.
