Locked FW: WSJT lock ups

Francis Thompson <icongeo@...>

Gents,

Many thanks for your kind replies regarding this problem.

I think Marion K4GOK may have the solution. I must confess I had not considered the Norton security software suite but that would certainly explain the intermittent nature of the problem.

I will turn off the auto scheduling and see if the problem goes away.

Regarding the drivers Lance W7GJ, I think that while that is certainly something that one should keep up to date, especially where WIN 10 and its updates are concerned, my PC is an HP and relatively new, so the HP utilities software included on the drive takes care of updating the drivers etc on a weekly basis.

Arnold, NK9O describes a problem with the waterfall at his setup. I too have seen this effect but at G4PMB it is due to connecting remotely to the PC running WSJTX from another PC elsewhere in the house. As the two PCs are connected by the WiFi network, it is often not possible for the data to be routed between them quickly enough to update the waterfall. Possibly if I were to use a LAN Ethernet cable connection, this may not occur but I am not able to “hard wire” them. The effect is only noticeable when receiving FT8 due to the increased PC time required and the amount of data being sent from the receiver PC to the display PC when the band is busy. If using JT65 there is no delay and therefore no effect on the waterfall, possibly because there is very little traffic these days….At worst on FT8 mode it will cause one cycle to be missed on receive and the station I am working will have to send his reply twice. No effect on transmission that I have noticed.

Another possibility is that your PC needs upgrading although I do not know what you are using so that is merely a suggestion. Decoding many FT8 signals simultaneously does use a lot of resources however so something to consider.

If the Norton “fix” works I will revert to the group in a couple of weeks and update the thread. Hopefully it may be of use to someone.

Once again, my sincere thanks to all for taking the time to put some ideas forward.

I went to the Control Panel and hit the Programs and Features icon and uninstalled everything listed that Del in the name.  I don't recall the names, but I think they all had something to do with Dell Customer Assistance or Dell Customer Experience in the name.

This was a big topic back a few months ago.  In my case, the Flex folks suggested it had to do with latency in the driver interrupt code.  Do a search for "latency" and/or " WSJT decoding stopping".  In my case, after weeks of sleuthing, and a lot of watching "Latency Monitor" results, I found that Dell (my machine is a Dell XPS) had loaded a lot of 'customer experience' monitoring software that ran in the background.  There were/are lots of references to this issue if you do a more global search for sound recording glitches related to latency in the drivers getting out of hand.  I removed all of the Dell related entities from the Control Panel, rebooted, and haven't had a fault since.  I can't really swear definitively that this was the cause, since I was also making a few other changes (like reverting to a prior version of WIndows (I have since gone back to the current version), disabling some plug and play drivers (but not all).  But at least one other person followed those steps and fixed his problem as well.

BTW, I got reamed for suggesting that perhaps WSJTX could be made a bit more robust in the face of these anomalies, so I wouldn't suggest pointing the finger in that direction!

Good luck!!

That happens here from time to time. Best I can tell is that it is
caused by my virus protection software doing some routine background
operations "while the computer is not in use". It happens so seldom that
I haven't sought a fix.

Hi Frank,

I also have had this exact same thing happen from time to time and I
have no idea
why. Make sure your computer firmware (NOT just operating system) is
up to date. I
did update the drivers for my computer, and I think that may have
helped, but I am
not sure.
