Locked New to me computer set up today

I picked up a new (to me) computer today and had some trouble getting WSJT to transmit.  I finally figured out the volume was turned off.  Once I turned it on it worked.  HOWEVER... when I tried to play a YouTube video to see why my WSJT contacts were not appearing in my Ham Radio Deluxe log  everything went crazy.  It seems like is was trying to transmit and I panicked.

I guess if I want to watch a video I better disable WSJT.

While we are at it any idea on the HD log problemt?

Thanks

What happened was that you have WSJT-X using the same soundcard as the computer does for sounds.    We hear this happening all the time with computer 'dings' and even movie soundtracks being transmitted.

The fix is to use an external USB sound card as the soundcard for WSJT-X, and leave the computer's built-in card as default for everything else.   You can pick up a very good USB dongle for under $15.00 at Amazon which will provide the 48kHz audio path needed.

I have no idea what you mean by the "HD log problem".

This is why it is better for some people to use a separate sound card device like a Signalink to operate digital modes, especially for people who use their computer for many other uses. We all have probably heard music, Windows sounds, voices, etc on the ham bands. Using a separate sound device can minimize or eliminate this from happening. It also simplifies audio settings for digital modes, as you can usually "set it and forget it".

It is also better not to use VOX on the rig but control the Tx from WSJTX.

I am using a Signalink, that is what is so puzzling.

Make sure your PC sound card is the system default, NOT the Signalink. Also ensure only your digital mode software is set to use the Signalink. Other apps may be set incorrectly.

Run a PTT line and avoid VOX. You’ll be glad you did.

David,
Don't forget the "panic" shortcut key: ESC will stop TX, abort QSO, clear next-call queue.
See 10.1.9 in the User Guide.
Cheers,

Windows may have set it as default.

As someone else has said, if you have CAT control, you may want to use that instead of VOX.  Allow the CAT control to trigger the Tx.

Some versions of windows will change the windows default sound device to the last sound device plugged in/added.  Additionally, the default sound device may be reset when windows does a ( twice a year) feature update.

FWIW, I've never used anything BUT VOX for SSB, RTTY, and other digital modes.

The key is the first part of George's advice to use the PC sound card for system sounds and the USB sound card for computer sound to/from the radio. Also FWIW, the SignaLink is not a great audio interface, and other lower cost units are better.

Not the cheapest interface, but looks to have a good chip and isolation. Native Linux support, as well. https://www.tindie.com/products/hb9zhk/digilink-nano/#specs

Just to reinforce what Jim has said about the SignaLink, here are some screenshots of what the audio spectrum looks like when three different USB codec devices were connected in turn to a Window 7 PC running the Spectran app.  In all of the following, the input gain from the attached USB codec device was set to 0dB, so there are no unwanted offsets to affect the spectra, and all the settings of the Spectran app were the same for all the screenshots so again the spectra can be compared directly:

The first image shows the spectrum coming out of a SignaLink-USB device; the LF noise below approx 500Hz is very apparent.  Any signals, such as transmissions from an FT8 Fox (they typically Tx around 300Hz), down at the lower end of the audio spectrum would be completely swamped by the LF noise generated within the SL-USB and therefore would not be decodable by WSJT-X.

The second image shows the spectrum from a cheap (approx $30) USB audio codec device sold under the name of Ugreen.  The difference between its LF noise and that of the SL-USB is self-evident.

The third image shows the spectrum from a G4ZLP DigiMaster DataLink device; this is functionally equivalent to an SL-USB but as can be seen the LF performance of the G4ZLP device is far superior to that of the SL-USB.  The G4ZLP device is also significantly cheaper than an SL-USB...

Given this evidence, I can't see why anyone would consider using an SL-USB when even a much cheaper USB audio codec 'dongle' gives significantly better LF performance, and the G4ZLP device provides not only much better performance at lower cost but also equivalent functionality.

Try XGGCOMMS.com ... interfaces for Yaesu, ICOM, and Kenwood.   Very reasonable.
