Locked Decoding stops -- wide graph full of horizontal green lines
Kyle K7UU
Yesterday my otherwise solid ham radio PC which runs WSJT-X failed to decode and the wide graph displayed a huge number of green horizontal lines. The odd behavior would happen for a few minutes then stop. Changed bands/rebooted the PC, same intermittent behavior. Tried changing clock sync program from NetTime to Dimension 4, same intermittent behavior. Then WSJT-X may run normally for a few minutes, but the stoppage and lines would occur again shortly. Please see attached screen capture.
Any ideas? Today all is well and the problem hasn't reappeared. Icom IC718, WSJT-X v2.1.0, RIGblaster Advantage, Ham Radio Deluxe 6.6.0.236, Windows 10 v1903. |

Make sure that the MS Internet time sync is disabled if you are running a third-party time sync tool. Some recent Windows 10 updates have unilaterally re-enable the Windows time sync and that can then get into a fight with your third-party time sync application. 73 |

Understood, Bill. Windows time sync is definitely off, but I did switch to Dimension 4 yesterday (from NetTime). Has not acted up today. If/when it goes haywire again, I will look at it from a time perspective. Thank you very much.

Kyle, Your email address threw me for a minute :) |

I also had problems with decoding and time sync after upgrading to Windows 10 1903.
I installed Dimension 4 v5.31, the newest version, and it appears to be synchronizing the time now. N2GWK, George |

Meinberg NTP is much better than Dim4. de Mike W9MDB

Hi Bill,
Unfortunately the decoding stoppage and horizontal green lines have returned. MS Internet time sync is off and I just installed Meinberg and that didn't help. No other time sync programs are running -- happens randomly on all bands. |

You are dropping audio packets. The squished lines are indicative of dropped audio. Check to see if you have updates pending for Windows. I helped another user last night that had the same problem and his computer was just super busy trying to do an update. de Mike W9MDB

Hi Mike. Thank you for the advice.
There was only a Windows Defender update available, but I have paused updates for 7 days. Fingers crossed. |

You may want to try LatencyMon and see if it thinks your computer interrupt situation is OK for audio. Ensure you have excluded the %LOCALAPPDATA%\WSJT-X directory from virus scanning. Also clear out all WAV files. Might do each of these space out a bit and see if any one makes a difference and let us know what works. Mike

Deleted the .wav files (which I do every 10 days anyway), but it made no difference. LatencyMon does not report audio problems ("appears to be suitable"). ALL of my problems started after updating to Windows 10 v1903 a few days ago. I know it's easy to blame a big Microsoft update for the world's problems, but in this case I am leaning that way.

Correction. LatencyMon is now reporting "...seems to be having difficulty..."

Have you excluded %LOCALAPPDATA%\WSJT-X from antivirus/malware ? de Mike W9MDB
