Locked WSJT-X is not decoding but shows signals on waterfall

Howard Sidorsky

I have recently reinstalled WSJT-X on a new computer and it show all the signals on the waterfall but is not decoding.  I am at a loss on how to fix this.  I can see many signals on the waterfall but no decode.

If I call CQ it shows on the RX Frequency side of the display but the Band Activity is blank.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am running HRD CAT connected to a IC7300.

Perhaps your new computer's time is off?

Please check by opening https://time.is/ in your browser.
You should see current time and a message "Your time is exact!".

I just found the problem.  It was the sound settings in the PC.  Everything is working great now....

Glad you found the solution Howard.

Have fun!

I have a very similar problem, but …..

wsjt-x when first started decodes nornmally, then as time goes on it decodes less and less, and eventually NO decodes.  restarting wsjt-x will correct the problem, temporarily,.  btw, when wsjt-x stops decoding, the waterfall is still actively displaying signals, and the pc speakers produce ft8 tones.

I noticed this problem shortly after windows did a significant update, 2 days ago.

anybody else experiencing this?

You can see on the waterfall whether the clock is off. The signals become misaligned with horizontal timeslot lines.
One other problem I had when running on a laptop was CPU overheating and going into thermal throttling. This can be seen in Task Manager, the CPU frequency goes down and the usage graph becomes flat (either pegged to 100% or to some lower value). WSJT-X starts skipping slots, and eventually stops decoding altogether. The fan is on full throttle, but can not keep up.

The fan is on full throttle, but can not keep up.

You probably need to remove all the dust & cat hair etc, from within the
laptop, especially the pretend carpet tile that forms between the fan
and CPU cooler fins..

If you smoke, that makes things even worse, forming a solid mass of crud
blocking the airflow between fan and cooler.

Cleaned out several things like that from other peoples laptops, as well
as accumulate cat hair from mine!

Afterwards, you can hardly hear the fan, & the PC flies and all is well,
again.

Intel CPU's as said, will slow down and save themselves.  AMD chips are
far less tolerant to thermal abuse!

Yesterday I opened WSJT-X and had the same problem with no FT8 decodes. I checked my computer clock and it was a full 4 seconds ahead!

After synchronization, everything is back to normal. I wonder if leap day on February 29 could have been a factor.

Windows 10 does have an easy synchronization feature. Go to Settings, Time & Language, Synchronize Your Clock, and Sync Now.

Hi Buddy,

I have a similar problem. When I start WSJT-X it will only decode half of the cycles. After about 20 minutes it settles down and decodes all. Then, when I try to answer a CQ, it will stop decoding AFTER the 1st reply message. Then it will decode only a few signals on the receive cycle. When I disable transmit, it will resume decoding all. Sometimes when I move the mouse it will start the 1/2 cycles decode routine again. AARRGGHH!

I've had the same problem.
Seems like the last time it happened, I tried lowering the RF Gain and it started decoding every sequence.
I wasn't getting high readings on the level meter at the time

If you're operating your receiver with the AGC turned off, as advised in the WSJT-X user documentation ("It is usually best to turn AGC off or reduce the RF gain control to minimize AGC action."), then you need to make absolutely certain that you're not suffering from overload somewhere along the receiver chain that's causing the audio output from the receiver to become distorted.  A quick listen to the audio should give you a good feel for the quality of the signal going into WSJT-X; any distortion will cause havoc with the signal processing and consequentially an absence of decodes.

As per the above quote from the User Guide, if you've turned the AGC off then it's necessary either to bring in sufficient RF front-end attenuation and/or to turn the receiver's RF gain control down until the audio sounds clean on even the strongest signals; it might then be necessary to increase the audio output level from the receiver and/or to adjust the computer's 'recording' audio level control to enable the recommended reading of 30dB on the WSJT-X 'thermometer' to be achieved when receiving only band noise.
