Gary,

Unplugging the microphone will take care of the problem.

Turning down the microphone gain would also work.

I always click on a 50Hz boundary before transmiting and most other operators do too. If this is the convention, I wonder why WSJT-X doesn't, by default, override us to do that. Lately, I've noticed some operators straddle the boundries and overlap with my signal. Perhaps there is a reason WSJT-X enables operators to operate across 50Hz boundries and I don't know it. Perhaps the 50Hz boundry convention is a myth. I'm eager to learn.

You want to adjust your waterfall to have just a little bit of "snow" across the waterfall -- speckles sprinkled throughout so you can see just a little bit of the noise floor.
They you'll start seeing low-level signals better like this.  So you want to avoid these places.  Can get a bit difficult to find an empty spot when the band is busy.

Can someone please provide (or direct me to) me with a clear explanation of how one can tell which slot an OP is using by looking at the waterfall?  Obviously, there is far more information that can be discerned from the waterfall than I have understood.

Such additional knowledge would not only make me a better OP, but would also help assure that I am not causing QRM to other OPs.

Thanks.

Sam, this comment about always looking at the waterfall (to verify that the CQer's opposite cycle appears to be unoccupied) makes me wonder whether we may be talking past one another by thinking of different scenarios. I can see how what you describe is practical in situations where the band is reasonably uncrowded. Most of the time when I am on 20 meters, though, not many CQers have their opposite cycle empty. If I were to reply to CQs only if the opposite slot appears empty, I would have to pass up a lot of desirable QSOs.

So I would say that if you are operating on uncrowded bands and/or you're operating very casually and are happy to pass up QSOs that don't fit your operating style in order to avoid QRMing stations that you can see on the waterfall, regardless of how desirable the other station might otherwise be, then I would withdraw my pushback to your operating style for answering CQs. Of course when you see signals on the opposite cycle, you don't necessarily know whether you're seeing people calling that station on his offset, people occupying the opposite cycle for other purposes, or both. With enough listening, you can probably figure out what's happening--at least at the moment. But listening that much and then refraining from calling if you can see that the signal(s) on the CQer's opposite cycle are not working the CQer would amount to that casual operating that I said I'd have to agree doesn't deserve pushback.

I think that a lot of disagreements result from people unintentionally talking about two different things, and that when they clarify what they're talking about, they find their disagreement pretty much evaporating. Perhaps that's what has happened here, in which case I'd apologize for killing your time. But maybe the discussion will prove helpful to others, since there are so many, many possibilities and details to sort through!

You're correct that I was unaware of this variant and how it operates in this regard. Thanks for the helpful information. I have in fact noticed at times that stations with signals strong enough to make me expect to be decoded (unless maybe they're running 10 KW?) have not replied to my calls. I've inclined to attribute these failures to the modesty of my station. That may well be the cause in some cases, but in other cases the cause may be what you describe here, so I'll keep this in mind and try choosing an offset closer to their own. I know that I have in fact moved my offset at times, hoping that a nearby signal will somehow be decoded better than one further away. I have not noticed a strong enough pattern of success to make me think that proximity is much of a factor, but certainly it would be in cases such as you describe, so moving closer seems like an attempt worth making for a QSO that I really want.

I sometimes just monitor activity in the band activity window without doing any transmitting, and I have not noticed any pattern of stations replying to
calls only on or near their own frequency. Are others aware that this is really happening much?

Randy, WS4C

----------------------

Something that you have missed is the fact that there are other programs with FT8 other than WSJT.

MSHV for instance has a "feature" that limits the range of audio frequencies that are decoded - no need for receiver filters - it is the software that is doing it by default and many users of that package simply have not figured out how to alter the setting so all too often if you try calling them away from their transmit frequency they simply will not see you until you get within their range of audio frequencies that the program will accept. It isn't always because you are being hidden by someone else on your chosen TX QRG.

Like others have said calling on the same QRG is not best practice but those that call you there and then remain on that QRG are not exactly polite operators....

I recently got Winlink, flDigi, and WSJT-X going on my old 'Mk2G using the ubiquitous Signalink and the CI-V cable. The Signalink attaches to the 13-pin connector on the back and then USB back to the computer. You can also use any other sound card interface such as a DRA board, DigiRig Mobile, etc. PTT would be handled through those interfaces. The only thing I changed on the internal menu was #30 to off - this forces PTT on all bands to be the same pin in the Signalink (rather than different for HF and VHF/UHF).

I’m also using 706 and assuming you have baud set correctly and can connect to WSJTX, make sure VOX mode and your audio drivers (in/out) are defined correctly.

On the rig itself yeah 20m/USB, set your power level for transmit and that’s about it. I can send screen shots if you need something specific.

Here is YouTube video just in case you need it.

A third commentary on using the IC706 MkIIG for WSJT:
Turn off any audio processing on the transmit side. No compression, no narrow filters in the audio path or RF chain.
If you are using either the 6 pin Mini-DIN or the 13 pin ACCY interface connector you MUST set menu option 29 to 1200 baud. (CAUTION - When you do a radio reset this gets changed back to 9600!) To avoid frying the final transistors, keep the output power no higher than 40%. (CAUTION - When you do a radio reset this gets changed back to full power!) If you see audio in the waterfall but get no decodes, there are two common problems: 1) The radio got set to LSB instead of UPPER sideband. 2) Your computer clock is off by two seconds or more.
And as someone else mentioned, check that the computer's USB audio sampling rate is set to 48 kHz, NOT the Microsoft default of 44.1. That applies to both the transmit and receive sides of your computer's USB port, you have to set BOTH correctly!

I use FTdx101 radio and after calibrating following 13.1 user guide, I checked the fmt.all file in Notepad which looked ok, but after clicking “solve for calibration parameters” I get an error box saying “check fmt.all for possible bad Data” which I did open up the file to view.
Anyone know where I’ve gone wrong!

Hi Ken

Without seeing your fmt.all file it is difficult say exact reason. Did you S/N values were, say better than 15 dB? I don't remember what is really needed for a proper result. Did you have any '*' marks on some lines?

HI Randy,
An apology is not necessary. Nothing that you said in any of your emails was derogatory, malicious or ruffled my feathers.    I send you another email offline that may shed some more light on your own personal experiences as you explained them to me.

Subject: Re: [WSJTX] Using WSJTX Waaterfall #FT8

I guess I will tentatively retract.

Another topic, entitled "Staying in your lane" (https://wsjtx.groups.io/g/main/topic/93252989), contains posts that seem to make a strong case for FT8's ability to decode overlapping signals reliably, with one contributor saying that our conceptions of QRM derived from experience with traditional modes is completely irrelevant to FT8 operating.

In the debate that Sam, W2JDB, and I have been having over his practice of answering CQs on the caller's offset, his trump card has been his positive experience. My trump card has also been my experience: very, very often I've been clipping along with QSOs just fine and then, suddenly, nobody at all is decoding me. I would say that in at least 80% of these cases, when I pause for a couple of seconds at the beginning of a transmission to get a look at the waterfall for my transmitting slot, I see another signal that was not present when I began using that slot. This has happened often enough to make me think that QRM is degrading other stations' ability to decode my transmissions, which are often weak due to the modesty of my station.

But correlation does not imply causation, and I can myself argue for alternative explanations for my experience. On the other hand, the programmers themselves do recommend against, for example, multiple stations replying to CQs on the CQer's offset, and there seems to be a strong consensus among ops that enabling the Hold TX function is highly preferable to calling your target station on his own offset. Surely this consensus must represent considerable collective experience that overlapping signals do degrade the probability of successful decodes. This is actually a topic that I would love to see discussed at length, and perhaps some real-world experiments on a fairly large scale could be devised in pursuit of some definitive answers. The application of the findings to operating practice could be significant. So, for example, Sam claims that setting up on the opposite time slot of a CQing station (as I often do when a band is crowded) is bad operating practice. My assumption, based on the common recommendation NOT to call stations on their own offset, is that this is actually a very good operating practice, as it uses the available bandwidth more efficiently than leaving those slots largely unoccupied. In fact, I wonder whether the success of Sam's personal experience may actually hinge on most people's following the recommended practice, which tends to leave open the slots where he calls CQers. If most people followed his own practice, then pileups on the more desirable stations would often result. Can FT8 reliably decode a dozen or more signals, including weak ones, piled up within a few Hertz?

Still, it seems appropriate, given my lack of both experience and technical expertise, to retract my specific charge that Sam's operating practice has worked well for him at the expense, at times, of other people's QSOs. This retraction is not a confession that I am definitely mistaken in this charge. It is only an acknowledgement that, in light of input recently gained that expands my knowledge about the degree to which FT8 can decode overlapping signals, I cannot support the charge with evidence that I consider adequate to warrant it. Perhaps QRM is not the cause of the QSO breakdowns that I have experienced. So, while I still have strong doubts about the appropriateness of this point of Sam's operating practice, I'll retract any definite accusation.

My thanks once again to Sam for interacting graciously. I hope that I have conducted my side of the debate in ways that do not require apology, but if I did overstep any bounds of propriety, I'm sorry for doing so and apologize for it.

Randy, WS4C
