Give your computer some "caffeine".  It won't go to sleep.   https://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/caffeine/
Keeps everything awake by auto making it see a key stroke every minute.  Works great.  Suggested to me by a computer guru. 73 Herb WB8ASI

There are some LED displays that do have the burn-in problem.  I own an HP Pavilion 22xi monitor.  The user manual specifically states

Burn-in image damage may occur on monitors that display the same static image on

screen for a prolonged period of time.* To avoid burn-in image damage on the monitor screen, you

should always activate a screen saver application or turn off the monitor when it is not in use for a

prolonged period of time. Image retention is a condition that may occur on all LCD screens."

There have always been false decodes on very weak signals, and in the presence of some forms of noise. With each upgrade, they have become less common. It's up to the "gears between the ears" of the operator to figure out when a decode is false. There are usually obvious clues.

Locked USB Audio Dropouts

Hi guys,

I've had an issue for a long time that I've never been able to fully debug...curious if anyone here has seen this or solved this?

Problem:  Tx audio or Tune is momentarily disrupted when interacting with any Windows window (maximize/minimize).  Rx decodes are also disrupted (no decode) when in this state.

Additional Details:

- The problem is never present after a fresh reboot
- The problem will eventually 100% appear over time(sometimes after 30 minutes, sometimes after 3 days) when I have my system up and running in it's normal state (2 x WSJT, 2 x JTAlert, DX4WIN, WinGrid, Chrome (~10 tabs).  I've never had the issue happen while actively using the machine, only after leaving it idle for a period of time and coming back.
- I'm using USB audio for both radios, one is an IC-9700 using the onboard USB interface, the other is an older radio interfaced with a Microham unit.  Both USB audio feeds behave EXACTLY the same way, so I assume this is a PC or OS problem.
- Once the system is in the bad state, interacting with ANY window while Txing vs. the tune button will cause a brief audio disruption.

Attempted Solutions:

- Disabled all OS power save functions
- Increased WSJT priority
- Disabled all OS sleep functions
- RAM upgrade (on the way...)
- WSJTX 2.1 > 2.1.2 upgrade

PC:
Processor i7-4790 @ 3.6GHz
8GB RAM (upgrading to 32GB shortly, but don't think this is RAM related based upon task manager outputs)
OS:  Win 7 Pro SP1

Anyone ever seen anything like this or have any tips or suggestions for further debug?

Thanks & 73

The issue is that special call signs (non-standard calls) are considered to be "Type 2" calls.  As somewhat documented, a "Type 2" call can not work another "Type 2" call.  I experience this as I operate as I1/ most every year and must be careful as to who I call.

I would agree that one of the newer USB sound cards that is popular with the guys on the EME reflector I subscribe to will go deeper, especially on JT65 or QRA64, but I’m pretty happy with the -21 to -24db that I get from time to time on FT8.

Thanks and have fun!!!

FWIW, one of the modern USB audio interfaces might allow better decoding down into the noise. http://k9yc.com/USB_Interfaces.pdf

I've never used anything but VOX to key my radios for RTTY and other digital modes -- IF the radio VOX circuitry works on the available aux audio input. I used to own an FT736, but sold it before the days of WSJT. :) I did use VOX on an aux input of a pair of FT1000MPs for RTTY contesting, and it worked fine.

Speaking about weird callsigns on the air, I’ve been monitoring 1.908 Mhz FT8 overnight to see if any Japanese stations are copyable. This is what my WSJT-X has monitored:
17 April at 1037Z 4D9ZDZ with YI7KFI 549 3020, at 1142Z copied 9T2YAH with HA3IHQ TU R559 5026 . Now this morning 18 April WSJT-X copied on 1.908 Mhz CQ QW43YGWWPNL 0db. Weird that in FT8 mode some of it makes sense but none of these show up in any callsign database. On the 17April just before the callsigns reported there was a Brazilian station calling CQ JA several times with no results. Likely too early at between 0600 and 0700.
Will keep up my experiment and see what comes up.

Wouln't it be a good idea for the IARU to remind all licensing adminstrations about the international regulations regarding callsigns  ?
Time to be reasonable again !!!
Too many nonsense callsigns issued, with matters not related to ham radio.

Hi Roger, as far as I can see from reading the amateur licence Ts & Cs on the Ofcom website the use of the /NHS suffix, and similar others such as /QRP, is not compliant with the UK licence regs.

I see that several UK stns, including a couple of 2Es and an M0, using the /NHS suffix have been spotted on the DXCluster this morning so unless Ofcom has very recently issued an NoV to permit the use of the suffix it would appear that they're all in contravention of their licence conditions...

Thanks for the details Butch.

CAT control of the FT736 can be a bit of a pain as you say, as unlike
other later rigs you loose manual control of a lot of the rig.  But it's
not that bad for remote working.

I'm not familiar with that MFJ device, but sounds like it works well for

Just thought I would let you all know and anyone who is also looking at this problem that Herb Blue was correct..  I set the screen saver to not kick in for 4 hours and as long as that didn't kick in, the mic kept working.. as soon as the screen saver came on, and I came back in the shack the mic wouldn't work again... So I agree, it's a screen saver problem..
