Sorry for what may seem like a dumb question, but when you say you can’t transmit on FT-8, do you mean all WSJT-X modes? I just upgraded from 2.5.0 to 2.5.4. Wish I didn’t. There’s a Hamlib error for some rigs for rig control. I experience some of the issues you have experienced. A simple stop transmit usually fixes the problem. My rig is a Yaesu FTDX -3000 using an OCF Dipole. This only happens occasionally. All other modes are fine (SSB, CW, RTTY, PSK). You may want to choose a different rig in the drop down and/or update the Hamlib file. My max power output is 30 watts.

Good Luck,

Maybe the Best S+P candidate could be highlighted with a special color so the op could manually initiate each QSO?
This would be the same number of clicks but would comply with the rules, I believe.

One interesting thing has confused me related to this and that is the special contest options.

For "EU VHF Contest" the auto sequence is like this according to the latest manual:

CQ TEST G4ABC IO91
G4ABC PA9XYZ JO22
<PA9XYZ> <G4ABC> 570123 IO91NP
<G4ABC> <PA9XYZ> R 580071 JO22DB
PA9XYZ G4ABC RR73

(Lets hope that the format is kept)

As you see there is no final 73 sent. The same is true for "NA VHF Contest". From the beginning I thought this was a bug in the implementation, but as it is in line with the documentation I assume it is correct. Following some peoples practise this would not count as an full QSO. But obviously this is correct, or? So maybe it should be clearly pointed out that for certain special modes this shorter message exchange is OK and counted as a full QSO?

I've observed this operating practice for some time now and not such a big deal. FT8 QSO should, but don't have to, end with 73's being exchanged. I'll usually get a confirmation via eQSL or LoTW so I assume they received my signal report. This makes me think I'm missing something. Is there an explanation?

Hi Jim,
I have assumed that RR73 is generally understood as "I confirm that I have received confirmation that you have received my report and I have received your report and now I thank for this QSO and log it and don't expect any further confirmation about this QSO. Of course you may sent a 73, but I am not needing it as a confirmation of this QSO, thanks again".

Mike and Dan,
Curious, why you respond to an R-XX with a 73? We have RR73 for that purpose. What you expect as the response to the 73?
By that you force a human action from the other operator as the automata don't respond to Tx5. No surprise that you need to send the 73 multiple times, hi!
See FT4_FT8_QEX-pdf Figure 6.

Mike,
I'll reply to an R-XX with a plane 73 up to four times. Then I assume he just can't receive me. Sometimes I'll use JTAlert's message facility to send a notification that I have them in my log.

Thanks for the clarification.

There are those that expect a 73 and those that don't.
If you or they are using the standard RRR response then both 73's are usually used in FT8.
But...they will log when they send their 73.
I've never seen anybody end after an R-XX report. If they keep sending it means they didn't get your 73.

Ropert,
You may have done this multiple times, but before sending your radio for repair, check again whether CAT control is working. The Test CAT in the Radio tab and e.g. that radio changes band. Also a check on the transmit audio path and settings both in rig and computer should not harm.
Good Luck!

Hi Tim,
I have not ever found that problem. Which program you are using to open it? You may try to close wsjt-x before opening the wsjtx_log.adi. If you are using Windows and that happens, perhaps you should restart Windows.

Many thanks Reino for all your information! Today I improved my station grounding in the shack. My grounding outside is good, three 2.4 meter ground rods that are 2.4 meter apart and close to the shack. I just increased the size of my copper buss bar pipe behind the radio and equipment to 25 mm diameter and the copper strap to the ground rods is also 25 mm wide. I even built a simple conducting pad for the computer to sit on. I wish I could think of a better ground connection for the computer but there is just nothing to screw to!

The connection between my computer and the radio is a high quality shielded Tripp Lite cable with built in ferrite at both ends and I have the 2 meter long cable passing through a ferrite (#31) torrid with 9 turns. I think everything is pretty will grounded but I think you are right and my end fed antenna is to blame. I think I remember that things worked ok at low power but quit working at 100 Watts. After a computer and radio reset things started working a couple of times but now I'm thinking the radio might be damaged.

The radio works fine on HF for SSB and AM modes and VHF/UHF for all modes. It just won't transmit on FT8. It receives and decodes fine on FT8 though. I don't think the computer is damaged because it seems to work fine (I'm on it now) and I downloaded WSJT-X on my wife's computer (identical to mine) and the radio still won't transmit.

Today I added a 4.3 meter (10% of 40 the meter band) counterpoise with a hose clamp to the SO-239 connector at the antenna and still the radio did not work even at 5 Watts so I'm thinking the radio is damaged. I might try another antenna but I doubt I'll get it to work. I think I'll need to send it back to Yaesu but at least it's under warranty still. I live in the middle of a large city (Houston, Texas, USA) in a single family house on a fairly small lot so the end fed antennas are really easy to work with and very stealthy but I'm not so sure about them anymore. I have had no problems at 100 Watts with any phone mode (I don't do CW) but I have never done anything digital before now.

I quickly looked at the two papers above and they look really good, I'll read them! Many thanks for all your help, I've really learned a lot here. I am an 'Extra' class ham here in the US but I took all three level ham tests quickly one after the other so I'm actually a very new ham and still learning the basics. Many thanks for all your help!

Hi Chuck

Thank you for your shared experience. A couple of observations:

* Experiments 1, 2, and 3 I used 90 watts output. In my pre formalized testing documented above (prior to these experiments) I ran 1 watt for the prior 2 months. Hence, power output for did not make a difference for WSPR. Hence, I will not rule out power related output is causing crashes, but I have 168 hours running non stop at 90 watts output, have similar results as 1 watt output....and the variable that changes is WSJT hitting around 180 +/- megs of RAM utilization before a crash occurs.

* Your experience leads me to think that there could in fact be two different areas of concern. I do not run FT8 at all, and WSPR does not crash until 180 +/- megs of RAM. Perhaps RF is impacting, regardless of power, the USB signal for FT8, WSJT, and the transceiver. I cannot speak to that. I noticed that most users discussed FT8 crashing but no one posting about WSPR crashing.

Michael,

Thank you. I will look at your page. It is inexpensive to add those type of USB adapters. I will buy and implement those as one of the backlog of experiments to run after the Experiment 4 series.

As for ground. I operate my lab in my garage. Behind my garage wall is where the main water main feeds the house with copper pipe. I happened to have spare RG8U, so I water hose clapped the outer RG8U shield directly to the copper pipe. This feed goes into my lab. The other end of the feed line connects to a backplane plate, and I connect my gear (Icom 7300, antenna tuner (LDG AT 1000 Proii), and antenna switch) to this plate.

I think I have a reasonable ground setup, but I am open to other suggestions.

------------

Experiment 4b - results so far.....this is curious

7:30PM PST

* 21hrs, 45 minutes have elapsed since experiment 4b began
* WSJT WSPR still transmitting; 90 watts output, 50% duty cycle
* 308 WSJT WSPR transmissions successfully logged

Observations
* Activity RAM at this juncture is 167.3 megs utilized; 30.9% LESS RAM than expected at this point
* I would have expected approximately 213.7 megs utilized with 308 WSJT WSPR transmissions successfully logged at this point; simple proportion math based on recorded outcomes from prior experiments where I logged WSJT RAM usage and number of WSJT WSPR transmissions until failure.
* I would have normally expected and predicted WSJT failure due to RAM utilization and number of TX WSPR logged in the next 2 to 3 hours based on prior recorded values

No configuration changes have been made between Experiment 4a and 4b...just a quit and restart of WSJT.

No explanation. Very peculiar.

Continuing to let experiment 4b run its course.

------------

Side observation:

* It reached 90+ F at our home here in the Silicon Valley today; garage was and still is about low 80's right now.

* Despite this closed environment temperature and running 90 watts output at 50% duty cycle for past 22+ hours, the Icom 7300 temp bar graph stabilizes at 30% from zero/off temp position. Yes, this device runs pretty cool in the grand scheme of things.

* It appears there are three fan speeds (very low, low and moderate) up to the 30% temp bar range; best guess from sight reading the temp bar graph is 20% along the bar graph low speed occurs; climbing beyond the 20% it appears fan moves to moderate speed. Doesn't really bother me because I just come to the lab to check on things and then walk away after recording values and observations.

I don't think there's a right, wrong, or even generally accepted practice.
It's really just all over the place.

Some DX stations won't respond to a grid square, a few (like the post
above) won't respond to only a signal report. Some ops insist on 73, some
do not.

I think DXpeditions are fairly consistent in wanting signal report only and
consider the QSO as logged when they send or receive RR73. Of course,
they're maximizing their limited time and resources, which is
understandable.

I tend to run without sending my grid, because I chase DX where that seems
to be more-preferred. If I send RR73 and don't get a 73 back, I usually
send it again once or twice, then move on.
