Eugene, This is what I use to fully backup the entire drive,
https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree
I do a backup once a week and sometimes sooner. I have been able to
retrieve a single file
from this backup that got trashed. Also do this,
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local
Right click on the folder WSJT-X and select Copy, then paste this into any
external drive
on a daily basis or sooner, back this to another drive just in case.

I also don't see any reason you couldn't use and export from LOTW but I
have to admit I've not do it using an LoTW ADI file.

locked WSJTX Colors #install #macOS #FT8

Ken D'Alessandro <n7kdken@...>

I just installed WSJTX on a new Mac computer. I copied the WSJTX folder in Users/<me>/Library (hidden folder)/Application Support/WSJTX (the folder) from my old computer to the new computer overwriting the unused new one in order to bring over all of the log files to import already logged QSOs from WSJTX on my old computer. The good news is that I got WSJTX to work. The bad news is that the COLORS preferences do not do anything to highlight entries in Band Activity in FT-8 since all entries in Band Activity in FT-8 have a white background with no color at all. I must be doing something wrong but I do not know what it is. Does anyone have any thoughts. I always found the colors helpful to avoid duplicates and see desired new stations/regions/countries.

Running Windows 10 on Dell computer with USB cable connection. CAT connection works with Ham Radio Deluxe and logging programs. Using CP2105 Enhanced port. Can receive ok but cannot transmit. Error msg is "Command rejected by the rig". Transmit worked ok a few weeks ago but not now. Have googled settings and tried all of the advice, but nothing works. Any suggestions will be very appreciated.

Hello all, I've been working for sometime to try to compile WSJT-X on MacOS but have hit a wall trying to resolve an @rpath not found issue during bundle fix up. I've googled until I'm googly-eyed and attempted numerous cmake commands to no avail. If there is someone on this group that might be willing to discuss off forum, I'd be very appreciative and willing to share my procedure with the group once successful. Thanks!

locked UDP packet transmission timing? #networking

David Lee

Do you know of any significant delays between the start of audio transmission and the sending of the UDP status packet?

I finished building my HF transmitter that uses a hacked version of the WSJT-X source code and it works well. But since I'm a ham, it's time to completely redesign and rebuild it!

I'm thinking about using the UDP status packets that are sent by WSJT-X to initiate transmission. I'll write a UDP server that listens for these packets. It will then encode the text being transmitted, create the GFSK frequencies, and send them to a DDS. (Note that I could also forward the UDP packet along to Gridtracker et al.)

This design means I no longer have to modify and rebuild the source code and can run standard WSJT-X binaries on any of my windows or Linux boxes on the network.

I'm concerned about UDP timing. Do you see any pitfalls with this architecture?

Cheers,
David, N5TLZ

locked Beacon Question #WSPR

Hello fellow hams,

I am looking at changing antennas for my beacons. Right now my WWoT/TAPR 30m/40m beacon is running off a Cushcraft R7 and my Deadburd 20m (offline) was on my G5RV. I am looking at maybe attaching my beacons to hamsticks and since I am not listening so the noise floor isn't an issue. These would be mounted to several large steel objects (massive propane tanks) that would provide a sufficient ground plane.

Any concerns that I should be made aware of with this possible antenna setup? Thanks.

I've seen this before too...been going on for a long time.

If you're seeing it more right now please download the latest DLL and start collecting debug info like this:

http://n0nb.users.sourceforge.net/

Please place this file as described below
https://www.dropbox.com/s/t52ngcalsgnpm8m/wsjtx_log_config.ini?dl=0

    C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\WSJT-X
The WSJT-X_Rigcontrol.log file will be in the same location

For Linux put it in
    ~/.config
The WSJT-X_Rigcontrol.log file will be here:
    ~/.local/share/WSJT-X

Restart WSJT-X and duplicate the problem.
Shut down WSJT-X

Then send me the WSJT-X_RigControl.log file along with the time it happens.

The LOTW download will be missing any DXCC card checks you had done.  That's a separate download from the DXCC awards page and that download does not contain time so you can't just import it.
DXCC's confirmed through LOTW are still in the LOTW download.

LOTW will also contain any QSOs you may have deleted from your log (mistakes or such).

Other than that it will work.

I don't know everything about file recovery, but I believe that if you
are using a spinning magnetic disk hard drive and not an SSD, it might
be possible to recover some of your log because on magnetic disks files
are erased by marking only the directory links as empty rather than
writing blank data into the formerly used disk sectors where the data
was.  So there at least used to be software that could scan a hard drive
and reassemble and reconnect the directory links to unmark the data
sectors as no longer empty.  It's also a way to recover data off a hard
drive for forensic reasons. The other bad news is that the longer you
wait it is more likely for disk sectors that held your log data may  be
overwritten when new files are stored to disk.

A big  background benefit of using LOTW is you will effectively have a
backup there, so that you can download your entire log from LOTW.
Anyone can tell us if I am wrong about that.

I have left in previous weeks a note on this reflector on how you can
use a DOS COMMAND PROMPT script to make a date and time stamped copy of
your WSJT-X log files. But no matter how you do it, backup files with
modified file names will prevent WSJT-X from overwriting your log file.
When it's too late, it may be too late.  Any backup copies of files can
be protected as READ ONLY with the file PROPERTIES menu selection.  READ
ONLY files will not be overwritten nor erased in ordinary use.

When you say "updated", how did you do it?   Was this something you built from the source tarball, or a repository somewhere?   I use 2.5.4 on an old Mac Mini running Debian 11 and it needed to be build from source, not taken from the repository.

You can go to the following link and download the Ubuntu script, run it, and it will install all of the required build dependencies.  Download the tarball, follow the instructions, you should be up and running in about 10 minutes.

locked #JT9 - Fast Mobile vie satellite #JT9

Andy Talbot

I've just recently been conducting some (one way) tests using JT9G-Fast and
JT9H-Fast through the QO-100 satellite. Running 10 Watt to a Quadrifilar
Helilx (QFH) antenna mounted on the roof of the car. Tx bursts, consisting
of four frames of either modes, repeated every 10 seconds gave a regular
low duty cycle test signal to listen to.
WSJT-X was set up at home, monitoring the satellite downlink.

Driving around local suburban and rural roads, generally at speeds up to 40
mph / 64kph and usually somewhat lower, I achieved successful decodes of
51% of the transmission bursts using JT4G-Fast, and 39% of all those using
JT9H-Fast. Considering the latter has a lower duty cycle (~ 1.7 second
transmission every 10s against JT4G-Fast 3.4s every 10s), and its inherent
3dB lower sensitivity I'd say the faster mode is the winner, in spite of
the slightly reduced decode rate success.

A plot of S/N for all successful decodes showed values ranging from 0dB to
-9dB (ref 2.5kHz).
Seems to me that if you need a one-way telemetry/alerting/warning
/messaging protocol through that sat from a mobile, the JT9G/H-Fast has a
lot going for it. Low duty cycle transmitters capable of 10 Watts at
2.4GHz are typically used in standard Wi-Fi booster amps.

I tried MSK144, but the link budget was at least 3dB short of even being
remotely useable, and would have needed something like 10dB increase n EIRP
to give a similar reliability.

A full write up of these tests will appear in due course
