Re: General Availability (GA) Release of WSJT-X version 2.5.0

Hi Bill,
excessively optimistic signal reports
are often due to restricted receiver bandwidth. The FT8 decoder
relies on a reasonably flat receiver bandwidth across the
displayed waterfall, and at least 2500 Hz wide. Narrower input
data bandwidth will cause underestimation of the noise level.

Hi Rob,
here's an example of usage with the
FST4W-1800 sample file that you can download with the WSJT-X

Ooops, I forgot the -F 20, but adding that doesn't affect the output: jt9 -L 1400 -H 1600 -f 1500 -d 1 -F 20 -p 120 -W 211002_0350.wav <DecodeFinished> 0 0 0

Could this be an effect of RFI? Your radio moves to transmit in the middle of the passband, and fails to move back because of RFI corrupting that command? You say nothing else has changed, but corrosion and age could have had an effect on your antenna system...

Bill,
Thank you. Thank you for the clarification of the frequency shift. Yes, I have been using "fake it" to split the transceiver transmit frequency from the receive frequency for about two years with zero problems. Two days ago, however, both the receive frequency and the transmit frequency began to move. By the third transmission in a sequence during a QSO, I can no longer hear any of the FT8 signals in the passband anymore and I have lost the contact I was making......without fail. On the video I posted you can see the receive frequency stepping away from its first setting which is where I started after setting the frequency for 80m using wsjt-x. Something disabling and different is happening and any other thoughts you might have would be great. I completely understand fake it moves the transmit frequency around to manage where in the passband transmit occurs. But, the receive frequency, my perception, never changed before. It stayed on the frequency set by wsjt-x. Thank you again. -- Mike - KM2B

I noticed a similar thing on the evening of 10/02 on 10m FT8. There was a good opening from W1 land to LU and PY land, and I was getting -15 to +05 and I was giving out +20 and most around +10. Interesting. Joe, K1YOW

Same here, v2.5.0 downloaded and installed perfectly. One thing I do notice is that there seem to be a much wider range of received signal strengths, with quite a few lower than they might have been with previous releases. Maybe WSJT-X, maybe recent Windows updates altering the CODEC settings. No problems operating, just rather disconcerting when I sent -01 to an N4 earlier and got +30 back!

Hello,
I am trying to add FST4W support to version 3.0 of my wspedaemon service (https://github.com/rrobinett/
For WSPR decoding I execute the 'wsprd' binary from the WSJT-x 2.5.0 giving it a 2 minute long wav file, e.g.: /usr/bin/wsprd -c -C 500 -o 4 -d -f 1.8366 211002_1450.wav
However when I execute a similar jt9 command on a wav file from which WSJT-x displays signals, I get no spots:
/usr/bin/jt9 -p 120 -W 211002_0350.wav
0 0 0 I can see that a successful decode by WSJT-x of that file runs jt9 through a shared memory interface, but that would be awkward to use in my SW environment.
Ideally, I would like to give jt9 a list of 2 or more one minute long wav files which would optimize the use of disk space when attempting to decode all of the FST4W modes.
Thanks for any help. 73

Mark,
Thanks for posting the information about your MF station. I was particularly interested in the re-used Southern Avionics Company NDB components since a small group which I formed a couple of years ago has obtained access to a de-commissioned NDB here in VK6. The station used two SAC transmitters, various changeover and monitoring equipment, an auto-coupler, and a 22 m live mast with a somewhat indeterminate (as yet) radial field. We are replacing a good deal of the original electronics with homebrew and commercial ham gear but we'll keep the autocoupler. Operations will be initially on 630 m using a Zachtek exciter and a very robust push-pull Class D PA; about 25 W transmitter output should give us the legal 5 W EIRP. In due course we'll have full remote operation supporting (at least) WSJT-X digital modes on 630 and 2200 m. It's taken a while to get the site access details sorted out but I'm hopeful the worst is now - almost - behind us. There's a placeholder QRZ page under the callsign VK6MJM which, in a nod to history, preserves the ident of the NDB. More immediately, my home 630 m station in Perth uses a Kenwood transceiver as a low-level exciter and receiver; a homebrew 300 W Class D PA; a homebrew coupler; and an umbrella-loaded T transmit antenna which looks suspiciously like a re-purposed ZS6BKW HF doublet. There's a bit more detail on my QRZ page if you're interested. From this corner of the world all the activity is JT-mode digital and I was pleased that the WSJT-X team responded so promptly to a request to allow optional disabling of very slow envelope edges in the FST4 and 4W modes, thereby helping users of simple non-linear PAs to try the new modes with existing gear. It's encouraging to see people experimenting with the new modes with, for example, reports of JA FST4W-1800 signals received in VK7 the other day. 73, Peter (Vk6HP).

Everyone,Mike, the shift you are seeing is 500 Hz, not 500 kHz as you incorrectly state. WSJT-X is behaving correctly, there is nothing wrong! You have selected ""Settings->Radio->Split Operating->Fake It", you chose to do that, and it is the best setting for your rig. That causes the software to adjust your rig's VFO dial frequency and Tx audio tones to always keep the tones in the 1500 Hz to 1999 Hz range, which is optimal for use with an SSB transmitter. 73 Bill G4WJS.

Everyone,
I am using an FT-1000MP with wsjt-x (multiple versions) with a SignaLink USB audio interface. You can find my Radio Setup Screen and Audio Setup Screen and a video of the behavior described below on transmit here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/wpahFAtUDy6p6gAf7 I have successfully utlized wsjt-x for FT-8 with the FT-1000MP almost from the initial introduction of that mode. Years now. I correctly set up my FT-1000MP based on the SignaLink instructions for USER mode here: http://www.tigertronics.com/ft1000mp.htm I am using the USER mode which activates PKT + LSB on the front panel but with the above instructions I end up on USB. This has worked for all digital modes for years. I correctly setup SignaLink USB for Windows 7 based on instructions here: http://www.tigertronics.com/windows7_8_10_SLUSB.htm This setup worked beautifully until a two days ago when suddenly, I noticed that, upon transmit from wsjt-x the frequency was shifting down by -0.5 MHz with many, but, not all transmissions initiated from wsjt-x. After two transmissions, the contact lost my signal due to frequency shift (that was my first heads up). The frequency shift does not occur outside of wsjt-x transmit. Now, two days later, I have migrated to the latest version of wsjt-x (previously was using 2.3.1 from May, 2021 now using 2.5, gone through all my menu settings and checked and rechecked setup settings in wsjt-x to no avail. Oddly, when I first noticed the the shift it was negative. Today it is positive. Always it is 0.5 MHz in step size. I have carefully gone through the FT-1000MP menu system for hours and all looks OK to me. The shift does NOT occur outside of wsjt-x when I transmit outside of User Mode. If anyone has any thoughts, I would be interested to hear them. I am, now, two days on, at a loss. -- Mike - KM2B

Or can we come up with a modification (a special value in one of the fields) of the EU VHF message that does not pop up a warning at the receiver? Mark ~ AE2EA <mark.erdle@...>
When I decided to operate on the newly opened 630 meter band, the lack of commercial amateur radio equipment for the bands below 160 meters forced me to get creative So here's the approach that I took to get on 630 meters by utilizing a repurposed non directional beacon, a modified HP downconverter, and a reconfigured 80 meter dipole antenna.
I originally used JT9 and WSPR but have migrated to FST4 and FST4W. On 630 meters every db of S/N improvement helps and I really appreciate the inclusion of the MF and LF modes. It's astounding what the roughly 350 milliwatts EIRP that my antenna radiates can do. Claude Shannon would be proud of what the WSJT-X developers have done.
