IMO your friend should use this opportunity to politely educate his email senders about updating the CTY file(s) on their computers. It is documented and something that EVERY ham should know. I see regular announcements from AD1C in the support group for my logging software when he releases a new version and I update my logger immediately. WSJT-X (and Fdigi) somewhat less often, but it gets done.

I don't see updating WSJT-X itself as a solution. It will just be out of date again in a month and it is already documented in the manual how to place user supplied update files. And this is not an issue that is unique to WSJT-X by a long stretch. It is up to the operators to keep ALL of his/her software up to date. I wouldn't mind it the WSJT-X team dropped the built in CTY altogether which would force the users to learn about AD1C. But I imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth that would transpire would be a huge headache...

Yes, he is sending the correct grid square but people don't readily look at and understand that his sent grid is in Washington State. It is confusing when WSJT reports him as being in Alaska rather than the USA.
What is most troubling is the email he gets blaming him for the error. He has NO control over what is reported by WSJT. He has contacted AD1C who keeps up with the CTY files and the change has been made. All that needs to happen now is for a new update of WSJT to be released and for all to download it. At that point, all will be good.
It is probably a good plan for serious users to download the latest CTY file and paste it into WSJT. Easy to do and all will be up to date with whatever changes are made. It is not only location errors like this but new calls, DXpedition calls, along with special event stations that are kept up to date with the CTY files. A lot of work for AD1C to keep up with this. Thanks to his efforts we can all be well informed rather than misinformed as long as we are willing to do the easy download and install into WSJT...

Hi Dave,

what modulation mode is selected on your IC-7300? Note you can have WSJT-X select the correct modulation mode for that rig by checking the "Settings->Radio->Mode->Data/Pkt" option. You also need to select the correct audio routing options in the IC-7300 menu to ensure Tx audio in DATA mode is taken from the USB audio connection.

Once you have output then this pinned post has a recipe to set the correct Tx audio level:

Hi OM,

WSJT-X does not use the Windows registry.

The error message indicates you have not selected the correct audio devices in "Settings->Audio". Sometimes a pending Windows update can disrupt audio interfaces, so try a Windows restart (note not shutdown and reboot).

Hi Dave,

Open the audio scope on the 7300 and see if audio is getting to the rig. On TX you should see the audio going out. Alternatively monitor the audio by ear.

My settings are:

WSJT-X 100%

Windows mixer 0 dB

Settings->Connectors->USB Mod level – 50%

Settings->Connectors->DATA MOD – USB

Power – 50%

I get about 50 W out with this.

Hi

Yes, when I realized I had this problem I did a search and found your thread Frode. I have the IC-7300. But not the latest firmware (I have 1.30). I don't have the "output" setting. But when realized that it was some issues with the PA I found that CI-V TRANSCEIVE was OFF. Very strange, since I don't remember that I turned it off at any time. Or ON to be honest. As you say in OFF mode everything seems to be very unreliable. Sometimes it works sometime not. In the SEP Expert manual it says that it should be ON. As mentioned earlier I did a test with the really old V2 since I had it on my laptop and everything was fine in "ON" mode. Rig and PA changed frequency at the same time. It seems that some got this problem on v2.5 but I got it already on v2.4. But maybe some misunderstanding from my side...

However, I don't know if this setting has anything to do with the polling function of the Expert 1K-FA, possibly causing it to not update the band/frequency once the band/frequency is changed in WSJT-X and the radio.

Hi Frode,

the Icom IC-7600 does not have the facility to split the REMOTE socket CI-V bus from the CI-V traffic carried over the USB connection, therefore the REMOTE CI-V traffic simply mirrors the traffic carried over the USB connection, and vice versa. With the newer Icom USB connected rigs the REMOTE CI-V bus can be configured to send independent status reports to allow another device to track the transceiver frequency and mode.

Hi Don,

  Sorry to hear about your friend's issue, but is he sending his current grid square information?  With vanity callsigns and folks that move and keep their call it can be difficult to figure out exactly where they are based on the call sign alone.  I always trust the grid square sent to know where they are.

Hi Ken,

see this pinned post for a recipe for setting Tx audio levels correctly:

The recipe is Windows based but the principles are the same for all systems and should be easy to translate to Linux systems using pulseaudio. You may find it useful to install and use the pavucontrol package to check and set levels.

I have been using WSJT-X for about a year on my iMac Retina 5K 2017 running Big Sur 11.5.1. I am running v2.3.0 0c42df. I have been running 2.3.0 since it was in beta. I has worked very well for me with my Icom IC-7300. Last weekend I made 64 contacts on FT-8 between Saturday and Sunday. In my shack I have an IC-9700 and IC-705 in addition to the IC-7300. I have also used WSJT-X with the IC-9700 successfully. Sunday afternoon I decided to try FT-8 on the IC-705. At one point I had all three radios connected to WSJT-X on the iMac. It was not without challenges but eventually I did get the IC-705 working with WSJT-X and made a couple of contacts. Then I decided to go back to the IC-7300. Unexpectedly that became a problem with no connection to between WSJT-X and the IC-7300.. Eventually I disconnected the USB cables from the iMac to the IC-9700 and the IC-705. I normally run gridTracker and MacLoggerDX and I turned both of them off. Now I can connect from WSJT-X to the IC-7300. I am able to receive FT-8 very well. If I try to transmit the Watt meter on the output of the IC-7300 shows normal output levels (70 Watts with the IC-7300 RF Power set at 70%). I have "Enable PSK Reporter Spotting" enabled on WSPT-X. and using WSPR Watch to review PSK Reporter beacon reports I see all kinds of stations reported by me but no one is reporting seeing my signal. So it looks like I am receiving just fine. I am putting out RF Energy but no one is receiving my signal. I have double and triple checked all the settings on the radio and WSJT-X. Test CAT and Test PTT pass. I did a configuration reset and set everything up again. I have restarted the iMac several times and again rechecked all the settings. No luck. I am hoping someone can suggest something I am missing.

Try setting the color scheme (not sure if that is the name) to default.  This can be found at bottom of waterfall window, 2nd row down, third input box over.  I once had a problem of no colors on waterfall.  Apparently I changed the color scheme by mistake.  Perhaps same problem on your end.

Still nothing on the waterfall. I'm hoping I've just made a newbie error so any help would be much appreciated.

FT8 is a whole new world for Ham Radio.  Most non hams are used to voice and/or CW so they are always impressed when I show them the main WSJT-X screen.  However, unless the activity on the screen happens to be a CQ the country data is not displayed.  Would it be possible in SWL mode to show the country information for both of the callsigns?  This would be a much more impressive demo of the FT8 world.

Hi Fred,

An interesting proposal for demo purposes. Instead of adding complexity of the normal operating version of the WSJT-X I propose that a companion program is made for this purpose. We have e.g. JTAlert and Gridtracker to help operating. We could have a demo addition as well. It need not be a really fast as there is no hurry for any operator’s action, just a nice display of additional information with nice colors. Well, may not be that simple to program, hi!
