Hi Jim,

 

A few comments on your screen dump.

 

  1. WSJT-X only decodes signals that are in the wide graph display. You’ll need to expand the width of that. Increase bins per pixel will allow greater bandwidth in the same window width.
  2. I can’t quite see the transmit level slider on the right, but it looks like about 50%. Keep that at 100%, your windows volume at 0 dB and adjust the rig or sound-card audio gain to just stop ALC kicking in.
  3. Others have mentioned that you are sending too much audio into WSJT-X.

Congratulations for getting audio from your rig to wsjt-x.

 

In addition to the excessive audio level you have still a nasty problem to be solved for transmission and perhaps for reception as well. Selecting Windows default as output also directs all ping and pongs, e.g. youtube voices and perhaps your PC microphone to your transmitter (in addition to FT8) unless all those other features are tuned off. You should remove WSJT-X from Windows default or actually select USB codec for audio interface in wsjt-x and in Windows sound settings for wsjt-x.

The red bar on the left means you are sending to much volume into WSJT-x, adjust the microphone setting in the audio contols

 

With little / no  signals it should be below 40, normal operating it should be about 60  and the bar green, with possibly the odd spike up into the red above 80

Do you mean getting rid of the spectrum?  You can adjust the % of that to 0 and get rid of it.

I've had to do that to. Its a issue of to many apps competing for audio.  Had that with tv recently getting audio from laptop to tv.

I went to YouTube and was going to watch the video but I had no sound, what I had to do was switch from codec to High Definition , my problem might be RealTec and being a complete idiot with computers I have no idea what is wrong.

Dave's chasing a red herring, IMHO, and he doesn't listen, and doesn't respond. His computer appears to have a different underlying problem, possibly infested with malware that's eating all his CPU or something else.

I'm still wrapping my head around all of the variants of Linux sound, and this doesn't really help with your problem, but I've got a:

Which puts out about 200 mW using direct synthesis (bit-banging a GPIO pin as an NTP-disciplined-oscillator?) and is heard all over the hemisphere from the Turks & Caicos as VP5WS on 40M WSPR, though usually only at night.

I know you are looking for better understanding of Linux sound, but if what you really wanted was a WSPR beacon, the above might be a simpler solution.

- When pulse is selected, the pavucontrol gui shows the WSJTX streams in both input and output, but the level indicator bars show nothing generated by WSJTX transmit and streams with sound don't reach the waterfall.
- The initial tests were in WSJTX 2.3.1 and upgrading to 2.4.0 changed nothing.
- I have injected audio into pulseaudio using paplay, to then routed it successfully to SDRAngel, the analog sound cards, and it appears in pavucontrol normally as a level, but failed to get it into WSJTX. This suggests that pulseaudio is piping streams to other connections.

I am a newbie in OS audio resources, however I have successfully connected WSJTX and SDRAngel with pulseaudio on several Ubuntu distros successfully - so not a total newbie. This means that my expectations seem reasonable. I succeeded by putting outputs to default devices or virtual sinks, and setting inputs to stream "monitors", but have not made it through the WSJTX sound I/O to the rest of the system on a Pi.

Please help. A direct solution to my problem sure would help get the beacon on the air, but resources to learn how to troubleshoot these sound servers could help lots of computerized hams now and in the future. Software generated messages piped directly to SDRs are the future of most communications. How does one un-blackbox ALSA and pulseaudio and proceed logically?

In the WSJT-X Rig settings select USB instead of Data/Pkt.

I assume you have Data/Pkt selected?

If you already have USB selected select None and set it yourself.  That would be a bug in hamlib that I'd need to fix.

Hi Joe,

if you have working CAT control then WSJT-X can select the mode used on your rig. The options group "Settings->Radio->Mode" determines which mode is set. Normally with rigs that have special DATA modes for AFSK operation should select "Data/Pkt" and configure the rig and audio connections appropriately.
