locked WSJT-X and Yeasu FT-450D-no transmit power #txaudio

Bill Seward

I’m trying to set up a Yeasu FT-450D and a Windows laptop for Field Day and I’ve hit the most intransigent problem I’ve ever seen with WSJT-X and Windows.

Laptop is an old Asus Q500A running Windows 10 Pro 20H2, build 19042.1081. Fully patched. Windows Defender AV. Windows has two sound devices: High Definition Audio Device and Intel Display Audio. Both have the latest drivers available. I am connected to the FT-450D with a Hamdaptor cable-plugs into the Data jack on the rig and the mic and speaker ports on the laptop. CAT control is via and FTDI to serial port on the rig.

WSJT-X is v2.4.0 c19d62. WSJT-X shows only the HDAD in the Settings | Audio tab. Mic jack is set to 100, mic boost is 0.0 db.

CAT control works. I can see incoming signals on the waterfall. This tells me I don’t have the jacks crossed. I can double click on one and try to answer, but according to my Telepost LP-700 I’m outputting between 0 and 0.2 watts. I have tried SSB and confirmed the rig will throw full power.

I’ve went through all setting changes I can find recommended here and elsewhere for the rig and had no luck. I’ve set the USB hubs per a recent post by G4WJS. No change.

I’ve set up WSJT-X several times on various computers, but never ran into this. Any thoughts?

Hi Jeff, and Jeremy,

you can get more certainty of audio device naming and selection on macOS by creating an aggregate audio device, then assign your rig's audio devices to it. You can name the aggregate device as to desire, and select that in WSJT-X. This is most useful when you have multiple rigs with in-built USB audio codecs, but can of course be used with a single radio as well.

Neither is a required suffix in US or possessions, but both are legal. US ham licenses are not tied to an operating location, since around the 1970s. The location on our licenses is the location where we guarantee that we can receive mail from the FCC, and calls are arbitrarily assigned on that basis. Before that change, we received a single piece of paper, with a license to operate, and a second license for a station at a specific location. When I moved from West Virginia to Chicago in '64, I got a new piece of paper with W9NEC replacing W8FNI. When I moved from Chicago to California with K9YC as a vanity call I'd obtained while in Chicago, I kept it. Our contest club has at least a dozen members from back east who kept the original calls.

/R is used to indicate either Rover or Repeater, /M for mobile. I almost never sign /6

Hi Joe,
Attached is the screen shot from the original QSO.
After the first three "60" messages, I used free text to send the other messages.
Now when I type in WB8LYJ/R and press "generate std msgs" it shows "WB8LYJ/R 73" in the TX5 message, without my call sign. It then sends "WB8LYJ/R 60"
I've attached that screen shot as well. Hope those images shed some light on what I'm experiencing.

Hi Frank,

receiving station reports are sent to PSK Reporter regardless of whether decodes suitable for spotting are received, all you need do is enable PSK Reporter spotting in "Settings->Reporting" and have a working Internet connection. What happens at the PSK Report server end is not something I can comment on, perhaps a question on the PSK Reporter support mailing list is your best option.

Reino Talarmo

Hi Joe,

I also noted that Q65 behaves differently than the other modes in the 77-bit family. Q65 leaves out my call e.g. in message “WB7LYJ/R OH3MA 73”, when it automatically generates that message resulting “WB7LYJ/R 73”. When I append my call into it, then it is sent properly. The omission is repeated, when I change mode to Q65 or reselect Q65. The correct form will be back changing mode to any other mode e.g. FT8.

I tested v2.5.0-rc1 68a3d4 in Windows 10 and v2.4.0 c19d62 in Windows 7.

I was using version 2.4. WB8LYJ/R told me he was using version 2.5.

What's up? Rover curse?

Thanks for any insight.

Have you done anything to try to reproduce this issue?  I have not been able to reproduce it here.

"WB8LYJ/R K5ND 73"  is a perfectly legitimate message, and as far as I can see it is generated, transmitted, and received correctly just like any other valid message in the "77-bit" WSJT-X modes (FST4, FT4, FT8, and Q65).

Please send us more details, if you believe something is wrong.

I don't know of any settings to stop that other than making sure graphics card/chip power management settings for the monitor and screen saver are disabled, YMMV.

I manually changed TX5 to say "KV4BV JO02 73" but the actual transmitted message was "KV4BV JO02 60" as seen on my own yellow transmitted message box and by a friend who monitored it being sent on air. Guess I if I had tried to send G4NBS JO02 73 it would have behaved normally?
