Hi Ken,

at first glance those look like typical audio harmonics generated by stations over-driving their transmitters modulator audio input. There are two particularly bad examples there. Note they could be generated at your end, and in this case I think that may be the case as every signal above a certain strength seems to be distorted. Make sure you do not have excess RF GAIN, e.g. if you have the AGC off then reduce the RF GAIN until your Rx audio is linear again. Also make sure your NB is disabled, they can cause distortion when there are strong signals in the Rx passband.

You can easily verify if the problem is at your end, simply tune your rig's Rx off by 500 Hz and see if the harmonic relationships change or just shift in frequency by the amount you shift frequency. A shift implies the problem is at the transmitting station, whereas if the harmonic spacings remain relative to your base frequency (signal offset times 2, times 3, time 4 etc.) then the problem is at your end.

Those are children signal of the strong signal near the low edge.
Too much audio input to TRX at a sender may cause this.

Ken,

It looks like the signal at ~370 Hz is well overdriving the audio stage, and generating AF harmonics. Each successive harmonic has the eight tones further apart.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for an excellent example what WSJT-X operator should not do!
The operator has select TX (audio) frequency about 420 Hz and is heavily over-driving audio path, including modulator of his rig. Those fences are just multiples of 420 Hz!

This is the reason why Split should be used whenever supported by the rig.

looks like a the signal at 400 Hz has a lot of harmonic distortion.  Each harmonic is wider aith more distinctly spaced tones.   Maybe one very strong signal from the hosue next door :)

Hi Ken,

You mean the obviously over-powered transmission; splattering & spewing harmonics like a busted jet engine spitting parts numbers out with the exhaust?

I could change the Icon back to  Globe on related desktop icons, bu selecting Properties/Shortcut/Change Icon, but there was no such possibility for the wsjtx.exe in the bin folder.

Try doing it when you first sit down to operate, or before you call CQ. Choose your frequency for the slot (1st or 2nd) and lock your transmit frequency. When someone answers your CQ, or when you answer theirs, you’re set. Nothing else needs to be done.

Hi Bill,

I realized what I did after posting.  I purged what I installed and downloaded the 64-bit Ubuntu version that didn't work.

So I opted for taking the SD card out of the old Pi and sticking it on the new.  Working great now!

I’m still very new to Linux and and slowly learning.  Compiling from source is not even sometime about to tackle at this point unless there is a very clear cut tutorial with great screenshots or written instructions.

At this point, I will swap SD cards when I want to operate Digital.  The Ubuntu card will be for my class work.

I’m not sure how you handle this, but you can close the thread out if need be.

My audio device for IC-7300  disappears when a windows update has been pending / waiting for shutdown, update, restart.  Happened 15 minutes ago when I powered off rig, and powered it on again.  I assume WSJTx had a lock on the device which was released when I shut them down, then Windows took the lock.  Upon power up of IC-7300 and restart of WSJTx, my audio device was missing as windows set a lock.  I then let shutdown, update, restart proceed.  All was fine afterwards.  This happened about 20 minutes ago.

I think that is your problem.

The 5 60m channels MUST use the lower frequencies on the band plan for USB (UPPER sideband!) WSJT-X  - ALWAYS uses USB for FT8, FT4...

Please re-LOOK at the band plan...
You are using the center of the channel, which is incorrect!

5357 kHz or 5.357 MHz is the proper frequency.   Retry tuning to that & see if it works.

That flashing TX may be the radio's way of warning you that you are out of band for the mode. (I don't own a 991, so I am not certain about this...)

Hi Chris,

this is a common path. I don't understand why so few realize that packages are built to target a particular Linux distribution and version. Only completely self-contained packages can be easily portable between Linux distributions and versions. WSJT-X uses many other packages so if your Linux distribution version is not the targeted one you should build from sources. It is much much easier than tying to install package versions that do not belong in your Linux distribution just to make our package run.

The errors you are getting are because you are climbing a big hill that you can avoid completely by building from sources!

They are working on Message Averaging as we speak.

Until the new release comes out, turn Message averaging off unless in a qso, you will get more decodes. When in QSO, turn it back on. (Don't forget to turn it off when done)

Also, turn Deep Decode off. There is little to no benefit in it on Q65 as it currently sits , and it only slows things down.

I still see the Average Decodes window and the Clear Avg button, and I see the two numbers in the 4th status window on the bottom incrementing 0 0, 0 1, 1 1, 1 2, etc.
I couldn't find an explanation of those two numbers but they appear to be the number of messages in the averaging accumulator for even and odd message periods, respectively (Is that correct?).

My understanding is that if I'm listening to a quiet band looking for a call (or looking for a response to my CQ's), I don't want averaging on, because I am just accumulating random noise in the message accumulators.   When I finally do get a message, it will be averaged with a lot of previous noise (unless I click Clr Avg after each message period).
Is that correct?

My general comment: the user manual (or Q65 quick start) doesn't really explain the message averaging process very well to a new user.  In addition, the controls don't seem to do what they say.  I'm not sure if this is just a Q65 issue, as I haven't used averaging previous to 2.4.0 or in  other modes.

Thanks for any help,
