locked Windows Signalink Wsjtx problem #NewUser

dvpoplewski

Hello all. I'm new to the group and new to WSJTX. Here is the problem I'm having. I'm trying to get on to FT8 using a Signalink USB interface to a Kenwood TS-950dx. I followed Signalinks instructions for setting up my computers sound card and the Signalink sound card. Of course it works in receive, but transmit is another story. Signalink says for trans mit settings to get their PTT LED to come on I need to g to volume mixer, select speaker, then select speakers USB codec, which I can do and set its level to 100%. That's fine. Then set application level to 50%. When I do this I have WSJTX in transmit mode, set the slider to 50% and the radio goes into transmit. After the watchdog timer in WSJTX clicks off transmit. My application slider now resets to 0%. If I go back to WSJTX and set the transmit button again to transmit. The radio will not go into transmit, because the application slider is still a 0%. I can go back into volume control and repeat the process and it will transmit. However this cycle just keeps repeating.

What am I missing about the windows setting for the application volume setting with WSJTX?  If I get it to transmit and the watchdog timer drops out, the slider will stay at 50% for a brief time and while watching it, I'll see it drop back to 0%.

Any ideas?

If I call someone, mostly a needed one, new entity, new state or new zone; I ALWAYS look for a free QRG and call there. Most of the cases it works. However when I call CQ the situation will be different.  My remote QTH
is in a very rare grid, I'm the only active HAM (JP92). Especially on 6 mtr I'm often getting piles when the band opens up. On CW I can move around my freq
and picking station. On FT8 most station are coming right on my QRG and if Call 1st is on, I'm unable to pick a split station that can be copied without problem. My wish is that
Call 1st should be able to set a priority to "split" stations. Working a pile I'm staying on one TX freq and try to pick split station. If I got a 73 from my partner I pick the next one. I have been working piles on CW  from
several semi rare entities and have a permanent call on Dominica (J73CCM). Next time on the island I will try FT8 and I guess the pile will be huge. Have not been able to test DX mode. I don't have CAT installed on my
remote (495 km on way).

A couple of days ago I had the first sporadic E opening for the season on 6mtr ft8 from my remote QTH, 63 degrees North (JP92).
Several stations calling, and to be fair with them I turned on Call 1st. 4 out of 5 stations called me on my ”slot”.
Some of them continued calling me after I answered a station and it ended more or less in a mess.
I wish I could set on a priority switch, split first,  together with the Call 1st switch. A Dream or a possibility?

Hi,

AIUI, you cannot just connect to the com port and expect things to work. Their has to be an intermediary program that understands the CI-V protocol and trannslates it into something other programs can understand. What is your neighbour trying to do and what software is he trying to use?

Hi Mike,

They have said why, in not so many words .

If the program misbehaves, it is one of the first things they suggest and it has a lot of success. I even had a ham radio software developer, who shall remain nameless, trying to persuade me to drop Log4OM because of this requirement. I'll leave things as they are at the moment as things are working FB after my sorting out some other config issues here. I do not want to rock the boat, hi.

How do I remove ALL traces of wsjtx and hamlib so I can start over?
I got a time out error with Omnirig and then a protocol issue with hamlib.

No FT8 for a while I guess. I leave the receiver on to hear the wonderful music there, however. :)

That it certainly not good practice.

It would be far more sensible to sort out the problem with Log40M rather than run everything as admin.

I have never run Log4OM as admin and have never had a problem.  I am aware that the Log4OM team thinks it's necessary but never have said why.  I also have set up numerous other people and they don't run Log4OM as admin either.
That has to be some old problem with Windows 7 or 8 or such.

Sri about that. I don't understand it myself, hi. Okay, if I load JTDX, I can see that it loads Omnirig (task manager). CAT and PTT work 100%. JTDX is set to use OmniRig 1.

>> Are you getting a rig control error message from WSJT-X when you select "Omni-Rig Rig 1"?

Yes. If I set WSJT-X the same way, Omnirig is NOT loaded and I get the "Rig Control Error" box. The only way to stop this is to select my rig (IC 7300) from the Hamlib list.

Mike,
I run my WSJT-X account in limited mode with settings locked. Not in Admin mode as a security measure. I did notice that the USB speaker default as set to 100%. This is how it has always been.
The WSJT-X has locked up even at 25% power with version 1.9rc3.  I recently experimented with changing USB speaker levels to 40% and 20%. This seems to have made a difference at all the different power levels.
With speaker output at 20% and power at say 50%, I am still getting about 50 watts output. I think the issue now has to do with a combination of speaker levels, power, and one other factor. My plastic laptop is right next to my
linear amp. The linear amp is in bypass mode. Things are tight in the space I have to work with. I do not think I have an RF problem with all the ferrite clamps used, but an audio problem in which version 1.9 is different than version 1.8.

I could fall back to version 1.8 for testing, but my time is limited for radio access. I will get back to this next week when I get back from a trip.

thanks for the pointers.

You say "did not" as in past-tense.  Can you run older versions NOW without such problems?  I'm betting you can't which would indicate something in your shack has changed.

When you run 80W do you have your rig set at 80W?  In most rigs you don't want to max out the rig power.  You set the audio stream going to the rig to get somewhere around 80-90% of the rig setting to avoid clipping.  ALC is usually an indicator (unless you're a K3 owner in which case their ALC indication needs to be 4 bars due the uniqueness of those rigs).

Yes, older versions of the program did NOT cause resets. They ran fine.
So if we assume that the USB cable reset during TX, then why is the config settings changing?  I am running FT8 at 50 to 80 watts. I have been doing this since FT8 came out. Prior. JT65 never had a problem.  I did notice that lowering the speaker volume from 50% to 20% also reduced the number or resets.
I understand you have over 10,000 users without this problem. The only thing that has changed is the WSJT-X version. So, I will need to figure a way to identify the source. The Application should give more details as to cause of the problem, that would help. Sound card error is not useful. Any suggestions to further identify this would be helpfull.

It's the loss of USB connection causing things to reset.

Are you saying that you can run an older version of WSJT-X and not have any problems at all?

Are you running the same mode & power you were running when did not have problems?
Do you notice that your problem is band and/or power specific?

There's nothing in WJST-X that would be causing problems...we have over 10,000 users and very few such problems and every time they've tracked down an RF problem or a loose/bad connector.

I may have an RF problem, but it did not have this effect on version 1.8rc3 and the new version 1.9rc3 has this problem most of the time. The old version and even older versions have never had my config file get changed.
Since the only thing that has changed is the software, something is going on. I will try to gather more info.

After launching WSJTX 1.9 rc3, and closing the new banner about reporting errors to the Dev team, the Radio settings will often get reset to the default settings. I have to put them back to the settings for my ICOM-7300.
If I am working a station, and increase power resulting in a soundcard error, the stop bits, PTT, and some other radio settings get reset back to original setting and I again have to put them back to match my rig. The only setting that does not change on that
page is the Rig Identifier (i.e. ICOM-7300).  I think there are three radio settings that get changed as a result of this behavior.  I will fire up the rig later today to give you the specific changes that get reset on power up and/or other conditions.
Also, I do see the old hamlib error that has been reported in many other forum discussions. I have my speaker out set very low so I no longer see these errors much, but when the speaker out to the rig via USB was higher the hamlib errors increase.

I hope this helps,
