Get this USB cable, it has ferite chokes on it, works great.

If he has a USB keyboard/mouse, he's might need clip in ferite chokes for those too.

Dave,

First and foremost, the MFJ is totally unneeded as that radio has a built in soundcard, so he only needs a single USB cable for both audio & CAT control.

There are a number of menu setting items that need to be set, like usb for output, baud, etc. Sorry I know yhe numbers for the 'S', but not the 'SG', check the manual, there is a whole section of settings for the radio.

Just found this...

If you have a Dell...

So I had this problem once upon a time and it turned out to be Dell 'customer satisfaction' software running in the background that caused huge variations in interrupt latency.  You can measure this with the LatencyMon app, or at least watch what happens right before it hangs up.  I'd like to say I figured it out, but truth be told I tripped across a post from some serious audio types (not hams) and they made the suggestion.  I went to Control Panel/Programs and uninstalled everything that had "Dell" in it and I have been without a crash for almost a year now.

Bad news is this exact solution doesn't apply unless you are running a Dell, but you might look for other applications that have big interrupt latencies and see if you need them.

Hi Karl, in answer to your questions:

1) I'm using the WSJT software, it seems to control the rig, except it does cause the rig to key.  It will change bands, and when I toggle the TUNE button, it's doing something in that it cause my rig to go from Simplex to Split, but nevers Transmit.
2) I'm using the USB cable from Tigertonics, so it connects to the 6 pin mini-DIN.  NOT using the mic jack.
3) The TUNE light comes on the WSJT and is red, but again the rig does NOT go into Transmit mode.  I've adjusted the Speaker leve higher, no effect.  I've adjusted the level on the computer and the program.  I'm using Win 8.1.

Thanks for your continued help!

Try reverting to v2.1.2 & see if the problem goes away.

V2.2.2 kept crashing on field day, and I don't know if it is related, but again, we know v2.1.2 worked.

I’ve long had this problem on rare occasion, but it does happen.  When it happens, it seems like a timing issue.  To make it work, I just hit HALT and immediately follow with the button next to it (Enable TX?).  I can’t see it right now because I’m  not home.  In other words, stop the transmission and re-enable it again.  If you’re fast, you’ll get enough sent that it will decode on the other end.  With me, this is always the first transmission for that QSO and seems to occur when I choose to call someone right before the cycle starts.

Maybe this will work for you.  Give it a try.  I’ve never really considered it a problem, just a timing issue.
