I disagree ... the default devices should be those used by
Windows for system sounds. Anything else should NOT be set as
default especially if its a radio soundcard, whether an internal
to the rig, or external USB card.
The reason is WIndows will use the default for any other
application along with what you're currently using. Such as
Windows notifications, errors from an anti-virus, soundtrack from
whatever video is being watched.
I've heard anecdotal stories about hearing a porn soundtrack, as
well as the soundtrack to Frozen !!

I disagree. The default Windows Playback and Recording devices
should be those needed by the current app in use.
Right click the speaker at the end of the Windows 10 task-bar and
select "Open Sound settings". Select the needed Sound "Output"
and "Input devices form the pull-down lists. Windows 10
automatically makes these the defaults.
Right click the speaker at the end of the Windows 10 task-bar and
select "Open Sound settings". Select "Open Volume mixer". The
"Volume Mixer" for the above selected "Output" device should
appear. Mute all inputs not needed. The app input will not
appear until the first time that it is present, for example;
"WSJT-X v2.1.0 by K1JT".
