Hey Phil, I'm a newbie also and had the same problem. I got several suggestions but none worked.
Finally I went back to "Radio" in settings and selected my rig as "NONE.  Error message went away and software started decoding. 
Everything seemed to worked proper and everything  was automatic!
I have been on for about 2 weeks and have made a couple hundred QSOs.
