My old laptop is starting to stumble after a decade of solid service, so I bought a new one and darned if I can get it properly configured.

Gee, that's old! Please upgrade to 2.5.4!
Settings (btw, same as old laptop which controls my rig just fine)
Serial Port: /dev/ttyUSB0

Hamlib error when attempting to Test CAT: Protocol error while getting current frequency

I've verified I'm in the dialout group.

Any ideas?
Are you sure that your rig is actually /dev/ttyUSB0 ?

With rig connected pen terminal and do:

ls -l /dev/serial/by-id/

This will show you the actual tty device IC7300 is linked to. Something like this:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 loka  10 08:32 usb-Silicon_Labs_CP2102_USB_to_UART_Bridge_Controller_IC-7300_03003103-if00-port0 -> ../../*ttyUSB0*
