1. It was mention I should get a 250 size toroid. What other sizes and types (besides F-31) should I get just to have around? I use the following bands 2m, 70cm, 20m, and 40m.
2. If you are in the US any suggestions on where to order from?
Both questions are answered in the links I posted. RFI-Ham.pdf has
Fair-Rite part numbers for the most useful sized parts and lists a number of vendors. It also includes a table you can fill in to see my suggestions for how many to order based on your on the air activity.
In general, most mainstream industrial electronics vendors stock a variety of Fair-Rite parts. I make most of my small purchases of electronic parts from Arrow Electronics, because they offer free overnight shipping for orders of $50 or more of what's in stock. I've heard that some other vendors have adopted this practice. BTW -- if $50 minimum sounds like a lot, these vendors use FedEx and UPS, and even the smallest shipment is going to set you back $15.
I search these vendors by entering the part number only in the search bar. These are not "onesy-twosy" vendors, but they generally sell at far lower mark-ups than the ones who advertise in QST and CQ. One of them, Amidon, invented fictitious "FT-" part numbers for ferrite cores so that they could sell them for 5X their cost! This rip-off has been going on for decades.
