Using Wireshark I discovered that WSJT-X was trying to use the "v" command (get_vfo) command with Hamlib and that command is rejected by Hamlib as an unsupported feature so WSJT-X gives up on trying to configure the rig.

not sure why you are replying to a message about a WSJT-X error when using a direct connection to a rig, when your issue seems to be related to using rigctrld as a rig server and network connections to it. Please start a new thread with some relevant details rather than trying to steal an unrelated thread.
